April 8th, 2008
Class activities for Tuesday, April 8
Spelling: Today we reviewed how the letter r changes the vowel sound (e.g., hose and horse). We also learned that or and ore are famous spelling patterns for the /or/ sound.
Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of at least seven words each are due Friday.
Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on determining importance and questioning.
Writing: Students continued to work on their I-Search projects (click here for more details) by collecting research on their I-Search 2008 class wiki pages. Students also created Bubbl.us accounts to create online mind maps and webs. Students will plan their presentations in a web using Bubbl.us.
A summary of the project:
Students will research their I-Search question using print and internet sources and create a digital presentation using PowerPoint or MrHowd.com Google Docs presentation software. Students are collecting their research on our I-Search 2008 class wiki. Later, students will present their findings to other students who sign up to attend their talk. The presentation slides will be turned in to portfolios for a writing grade.
The I-Search presentation is due April 25.
Math: I introduced exponents and powers today, and we focused on powers of 10. Homework is to complete Journal pp. 138-139, started in class.
Science: We took notes in our minibooks and learned that fast vibrations make high pitches, and slow vibrations make low pitches.
Social Studies: We started learning about the French and Indian War, using an SQ3R organizer.
