Today was our Hawaiian Beach Bash! Students surfed, put on Hawaiian shirts, threw frisbees, tossed foam noodles, passed coconuts, ate pineapple slices, chewed on lemons and limes, had a hula-hoop contest, and danced to the Beach Boys! Later, it was Hawaiian pizza, Capri Suns and fruit kabobs! Thanks to all the families that helped with food, donations, decorations, games, setup and cleanup! Class activities for Thursday, October 29

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Spelling:  We reviewed long e spelling patterns and discussed spelling surprise words. A word is a spelling surprise when you have to use your eyes to spell it, not just sounding it out. For example, people is a spelling surprise, because it doesn’t look like it sounds.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 15-17 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: None today due to technology.

The next piece of writing will be a personal narrative that has been slightly fictionalized, or, in other words, a personal narrative based on a true story. Spelling:  None today due to taking a class photograph.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 15-17 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We talked about using choice adjectives to describe the story better. Adjectives describe nouns and help the reader to picture the story. The class added adjectives to poem, based on work by Karen Hesse, to make it more interesting:

Come On, Rain

Steaming heat
Crusty vine
Dry alleyway
Drooping lupines
Dusty path
Drying heat

Cold glass
Stormy sky
Moist air

The adjectives show up before the nouns and answer the question, “What kind?”

Students also worked on their draft or started revising today.

The next piece of writing will be a personal narrative that has been slightly fictionalized, or, in other words, a personal narrative based on a true story. Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 15-17 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We discussed responsibility in working on writing at school and home. This means working on writing a little bit most nights, even for just 10 minutes. That time will add up and help students to stay on schedule. I also asked students to start taking their writer’s folder home each night, so that they can work on writing if they have time.

Students also worked on their draft today.

The next piece of writing will be a personal narrative that has been slightly fictionalized, or, in other words, a personal narrative based on a true story. This piece of writing will be due Friday, November 6. This will be the final writing piece of the first marking period.  Students should be ready working on drafts by now.

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Spelling:  Today was a preview of upcoming spelling words.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 15-17 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We talked about using precise nouns in writing: instead of writing “brown stuff,” say “rust.” Instead of “thing to lift the car up,” say “jack.” By being exact and specific, the reader will better understand what the writing is about.

Note also that many students have not yet turned in their piece of writing that was due October 16. Students had three weeks to work on this piece of writing. You can check to see if your student has completed their writing by logging in to SnapGrades and clicking on writing.
