Class activities for Friday, November 9
Spelling: We punctuating dialogue and the difference between dialogue and description:
- Mother asked, “What’s the matter?”
- Mother asked what was the matter.
The first sentence above uses quotation marks to show the actual works of Mother, while the second sentence does not tell her actual words.
Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.
Reading: The final four groups presented Literature Circles projects to share their books with the class.
Writing: Today was a drafting work day.
The next piece of writing, a fiction story, will be due on Monday, November 26. Students should be drafting by now.
Math: None today due to STAR Friday.
Science: None today due to extra time with social studies.
Social Studies: We continued to learn about four important events in Europe that motivated explorers to come to the New World:
- Muslims were defeated in Spain and the Catholic Church grew;
- Spain sent Christopher Columbus to share the Catholic faith and look for riches;
- Protestant Churches formed when Martin Luther protested against the Catholic Church and started the Reformation;
- Protestant England defeated Catholic Spain and the Spanish Armada. England later sent explorers to maintain their power and wealth in the world.
Today, we learned about the complaints of Martin Luther against the Catholic Church and why he protested their teachings.
