Class activities for Thursday, January 24
Spelling: We reviewed common spelling patterns for the /j/ sound. We learned that dge usually following a short vowel sound (as in fudge or badge), but the ge pattern usually follows a long vowel (as in wage or huge).
Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.
Reading: Today was a reading and discussion day in Literature Circles.
Writing: We read a short story and practiced thinking about a theme or big idea from the story. Students started to write an essay from this story and planned what examples they would use to prove their thinking.
The next piece of writing, a literary essay (here’s an example), is due Friday, February 8. Students will select a book or story and write an essay to share their thoughts about a theme or big idea from the story.
Math: We practiced solving multiple step problems today. Homework is to finish Journal P6-7.
Science: None today due to extra time with reading.
Social Studies: Students compared and contracted the three English settlements of Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth.
