Class activities for Tuesday, September 17
Spelling: None today.
You can find our yearly 500 word list here. Words will be selected from this list for each test. Students will not know which words will be tested. Find out more on our spelling page.
Cursive: We’ll start cursive soon.
Reading: Today, students recieved their STAR Reading level from the last computerized reading assessment. We also used a website called Trackthisfor.me to track reading and math levels this year. Each student created an account and entered their first reading test. Below is our class average reading level, which we will track over the year.
Writing: Students continued to work on their personal narrative. Our first writing piece, a personal narrative, is due Monday, September 23 (new date). The personal narrative should be written about a memory or true event in each student’s life. Your student is using MrHowd.com Google Docs to write the story. They can work from home; have them show you what they’ve got so far.
Also, students were given a colored folder today to use as their writing portfolio. Students were asked to decorate the folder with pictures, clippings, stickers or drawings. Homework is to start decorating the portfolios, which will be laminated next week.
Math: None today due to extra time with Constitution Day.
Science: Students completed an experiment today about what items stick to a magnet, and what happens when magnets get close to each other. Homework is to finish the Magnetic Observations experiment.
The Energy Fair is on Friday, September 27 (more details here).
Social Studies: Today was Constitution Day. We watched some SchoolHouse Rock videos about no more kings, about the start of the Revolution, and the Preamble to the Constitution. We also sang the Preamble:
We the people
In order to form a more perfect union,
Establish justice, insure domestic tranquility,
Provide for the common defense,
Promote the general welfare and
Secure the blessings of liberty
To ourselves and our posterity
Do ordain and establish this Constitution
For the United States of America.
Here’s the song:
The Preamble of the Constitution
