Class activities for Thursday, January 30

Spelling: We learned another rule for adding suffixes: for words ending in y, change the y to i before adding the suffix, except for ing.

Cursive: Cursive workbook pp. 64-65 are due Monday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students selected a library book on which to write a literary essay. Here are the main parts of a literary essay:

  1. Introduction with the name of the book, summary, and the theme of the book
  2. At least three examples from the book that support and prove the theme
  3. A conclusion that restates the theme and what can be learned from the book

Students started reading their book and working on their instruction. A literary essay is due Friday, February 7.

Math: Today students completed a test about addition and subtraction.

Science: Students completed an experiment about determining the state of matter in three different balloons. Homework is to finish the 3 Balloons experiment if not done in class.

Social Studies: We learned how changes in technology, natural resources, or competition can change an entire economy. An example is the ghost town of Rhyolite that had a growing economy because of the discovery of gold, but became a ghost town after the mines were closed.
