February 25th, 2014
Class activities for Tuesday, February 25
Spelling: None today.
Cursive: Cursive workbook pp. 75-77 are due Friday.
Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on making connections as a reading strategy.
Writing: We started to write a persuasive essay together to remember the four important parts, a paragraph for each:
- Introduction explaining the idea and why it is helpful
- Prove how the idea matches a core democratic value
- Use some data to support the idea
- Restate the idea again and why it should be selected
The persuasive letter project (more details here and here’s a checklist) is due Monday, March 3. Homework is to finish the draft of the letter, including all four paragraphs listed above. We’ll start revising tomorrow.
Math: We reviewed multiplying with partial products and the standard method. Journal P6-2 corresponds. Students also practiced math skills using MobyMax. Homework is to work on MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for 15 minutes or more. (Starting today, I’m going to leave this in as the permanent math homework for the rest of the year. Doing this extra practice would be a great way to fill in gaps from third grade, or work ahead in math and get ready for high math in middle school. This is also part of your student’s daily homework time of 40 minutes, including math, writing, cursive, and other school homework. Reading 20 minutes for bed is a good idea, too!)
Science: Students worked on a district matter and energy test today.
Social Studies: None today due to extra time with science. We’ll have extra social studies time tomorrow.
