Class activities for Friday May 30

Friday, May 30th, 2014

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: There will be no new cursive assignments this year.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Today was the final scheduled work day for students to finish their Find It, Decide It research project. Homework is to finish the project if not done in class.

Math: We reviewed the 4th grade geometry skills today, and students practiced them in Khan Academy.

Homework is to work on MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for 15 minutes or more, and to level up on the skills listed above if not done in class.

Science: We learned about how fossils give us clues about the past. We also learned about how adaptations and behavior traits help an animal survive in its environment.

Social Studies: We learned that people use natural resources in their area to make many useful products, and that can change the environment.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on inferring and determining importance as reading strategies.

Writing: Students are continuing to work with partners on their Find It, Decide It research project. This piece is due Friday, May 30.

Math: Today was a work day to practice fractions, factors, multiples, and geometry skills in Khan Academy.

Homework is to work on MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for 15 minutes or more, and to level up on the skills listed above if not done in class.

Science: We started to learn about how fossils provide evidence of the past.

Social Studies: We learned that immigrants have moved to certain regions of the US, and they usually bring their culture and traditions with them to change their new homes.

Writing: Students are continuing to work with partners on their Find It, Decide It research project. This piece is due Friday, May 30.

Math: We started to practice factors and multiples today. We used Khan Academy to practice these skills:

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: None today; we’ll have extra time tomorrow to work on this project. Students are continuing to work with partners on their Find It, Decide It research project. This piece is due Friday, May 30.

Math: We continued practicing fractions today. We used Khan Academy to practice these skills:

Homework is to work on MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for 15 minutes or more, and to level up on the skills listed above if not done in class.

Science: Students dissected owl pellets today to see what was a part of the owl’s food chain. Most students found bones of mice or voles.

Social Studies: We leaned that there are “push” and “pull” factors that lead to people moving to new places. People are usually pushed out by negative factors, and pulled by positive things. We learned that people moved in the US during settlement, to escape slavery, to find factory jobs, and during resettlement of Indians.

Science: We talked about how changes in the environment can affect a food chain or web.

Social Studies: We read, A River Ran Wild, about how humans polluted and then restored the Nashua River in Massachusetts. Students wrote notes about human actions and consequences. Homework is to finish the notes if not completed in class.
