January 5th, 2016
Class activities for Tuesday, January 5
Spelling: None today.
Cursive: Cursive pages 37-39 are available and due on Friday.
Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on breaking difficult words into chunks.
Writing: We looked at some endings to different Choose Your Own Adventure stories to see what the object of the “game” was and the different ways the game could be won or lost. Students also planned how the reader would win their adventure story and prewrote elements of the plot.
Our current writing project is a Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook. Students are writing a fiction adventure story with choices that the reader can make. Each choice can change how the story turns out. Students will publish their adventure as a website at sites.mrhowd.com. See below for more details.
This project is due Friday, January 22. Students should prewriting at this point. Get some ideas below or right here.
Choose Your Own Adventure Resources
- See examples of Choose Your Own Adventure fiction websites here and here.
- Here are some good student examples:
- Look at an Underground Railroad Choose Your Own Adventure website.
- Look through the Underground Railroad Interactive History Adventure book (hint: search for “the end” to see some of the endings of the book).
- Look at some examples of different kinds of endings in a Choose Your Own Adventure Story.
- View the titles of all the Choose Your Own Adventure books to get adventure topic ideas.
- Play Zork, a text-based computer game. Here is a list of commands and directions. Here is a map of the dungeon if you get stuck or lost.
- Play Oregon Trail, another text-based computer game.
- Find a complete list of resources here.
Math: We practiced multiplying arrays with multiples of 10 or 100: 3 x 100 or 4 x 90. Students also started multiplication skills at Khan Academy.
Homework is to practice MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for at least 15 minutes.
Science: We reviewed our experiment from yesterday about about states of matter.
Social Studies: We reviewed our last class activity about predicting imports from and exports to China. We learned that the US exports many natural resources to China, while China exports finished products to the US.
Notes:
- Grand Blanc Community Education is asking about the interest level for August day camps for kids. Some parents have asked for things to keep their kids busy during the dog-days of summer while gearing them up for school. Please share your ideas in this 3-minute survey.
