Class activities for Wednesday, February 28

Wednesday, February 28th, 2018

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Friday.

Reading: We finished reading an informational book about a day in the Senate.

Writing: We talked about choosing the best evidence in an essay. For our letter, choosing the best core democratic value is important. The pursuit of happiness is not always the best argument because it can sound selfish if it’s not explained enough. Students also worked on revising their letter.

Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should be revising by now.

This persuasive letter project will be due Monday, March 5.

Math: We started playing a partner game to practice 2-digit multiplication Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We had a health lesson today about advertising food products.

Social Studies: None today due to practicing for the fourth grade musical.

Spelling: We learned that the letter r following a vowel makes a new sound.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We learned that transition words, such as first, next, last, second, finally, help organize a list or paragraphs. Students also worked on revising their letter.

Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should be finished with a draft letter and revising by now.

This persuasive letter project will be due Monday, March 5.

Math: Students worked on MobyMax Math or Khan Academy today; a final few students were trying to finish 2-digit multiplication. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Students worked on an experiment about making an electric circuit with a bulb, wire, and battery. Homework is to finish Sparky’s Light Kit if not finished in class.

Social Studies: Today we finished learning about the features of a market economy. We learned that incentives make buyers do something, and specialization is when people become experts at a job and trade for other things they need.

Character Strength: We are learning about social intelligence this week.

Spelling: We practiced common spelling patterns for the /ks/ sound.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Friday.

Reading: We read a fantasy story about a student that wanted to run for class president.

Writing: Students worked on drafting the end of their persuasive letter today. Now each student should be finished with these parts:

  1. The idea and many reasons for why the idea is a good one
  2. One or two core democratic values that match the idea
  3. A paragraph proving if other people agree with the idea
  4. A conclusion that restates the ideas again.

Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes to finish drafting.

This persuasive letter project will be due Monday, March 5.

Reading: Students worked on MobyMax Reading Stories today.

Writing: Students surveyed the class to collect data. They also worked on drafting the introduction and evidence of their letter. That includes:

  1. The idea
  2. Many reasons for why the idea is a good one
  3. One or two core democratic values that match the idea
  4. A paragraph proving if other people agree with the idea

Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes if needed.

This persuasive letter project will be due Monday, March 5.

Science: Students worked on making a graph as part of our matter test today. We will continue our test about matter and energy next week. We also started our electricity topic with an experiment about lighting a light bulb.

Social Studies: Today we continued to learn about the features of a market economy. We learned that buyers and sellers decide to buy or sell. People and businesses own most of the land, building, and resources in America, not the government. Businesses make what consumers demand.

Character Strength: We made cards to send to students involved in the Florida shooting today.

Spelling: We learned about soft syllable endings in the words fountain, mountain, captain, certain. They sound different than their spellings.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Friday.

Reading: Students worked on MobyMax Foundational Reading today.

Writing: Students completed prewriting conferences today and they started working on their letter draft.

Here are the parts that students should have prewritten and started drafting:

  1. What is your idea?
  2. What are reasons why your idea is a good idea?
  3. What are some core democratic values that match your idea?

Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes.
