Class activities for Thursday, May 31

Thursday, May 31st, 2018

Spelling: Students made Words to Learn lists from words they missed on the last spelling test. These are words for your student to study for our next test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading skills practice day. Also, all library books are due tomorrow.

Writing: Students worked on editing their Find It, Decide It project, which is due Friday, June 1. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes.

Math: We worked on geometry skills today. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We set up plant experiments to test if plants need:

  • water
  • light
  • heat (not too much and not too little)
  • air

We also tested if plants need soil using our class dinosaur plant. To the right is our plant after water was added, expanding from being dormant to growing in less than one hour, with no soil. But clearly it needs water.

Social Studies: None today.

Character Strength: There are no new character strengths this year.

Notes:

  • End of the Year activities:
    • Field Day, June 1. See the schedule. Students should bring a change of clothes, a swimsuit, a towel, sunblock, and a water bottle. Girls, please wear suits that are one piece, a two-piece suit that meets in the middle, or a two-piece suit that is covered up. Boys, please have a shirt to wear with your swimsuit.
    • Dairy Queen Field Trip, June 12. Family members are invited to walk with us. Student order forms are needed by June 7.
    • End of the Year Potluck and Picnic, June 13. Family members are invited to lunch and to help with games. See our volunteer list here.
    • Rollhaven Field Trip, June 14. Family members are invited to go with us.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Friday.

Reading: None today due to working on a STAR Math test.

Writing: Students worked on revising their Find It, Decide It project, which is due Friday, June 1. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes.

Math: We worked on identifying, measuring, and drawing angles today. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We practiced making food chains today. We also learned about how environmental changes can affect food chains.

Social Studies: We learned more about how immigrants bring their culture to America and change the new places they live in.

Character Strength: There are no new character strengths this year.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Friday.

Reading: We read an historical fiction story about escaped slaves hiding in St. Augustine, Florida.

Writing: Students worked on making a decision from their research and supporting it with evidence. The Find It, Decide It project is due Friday, June 1. Homework is to finish drafting by tonight with a list of five similarities, five differences, and five reasons for the decision, with sources.

Math: We worked on identifying and drawing lines, rays, and line segments. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We practiced making food chains and webs today.

Social Studies: We looked at how immigrants brought their culture to America.

Character Strength: There are no new character strengths this year.

Spelling: We practiced common spelling patterns for the /ou/ sound.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Friday.

Reading: None today.

Writing: Students worked on making a decision from their research and supporting it with evidence. The Find It, Decide It project is due Friday, June 1. Homework is to finishing drafting by Tuesday with a list of five similarities, five differences, and five reasons for the decision, with sources.

Math: We started working on geometry skills today. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Students dissected owl pellets today to discover what owls use as a source of food and energy. Most students found various rodents and two groups found the remains of a sparrow or other small bird.

Social Studies: We looked at artifacts that immigrants brought to America and analyzed why they would bring the items.

Character Strength: There are no new character strengths this year.

Notes:

  • Wear McGrath shirts or red or black for a school picture on Tuesday! Our school was third place in the country for raising money for Dimes for Diapers and ABC12 will be here to snap a photo of us!

Reading: Today was our final STAR Reading test of the year.

Writing: Students worked on contrasting information for their Find It, Decide It research project today. The Find It, Decide It project is due Friday, June 1. Homework is to continue researching.

Math: Students used today to catch up on missing math skills or work ahead. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: None today.

Social Studies: We learned about the different people that have immigrated to Michigan and why they came.

Character Strength: There are no new character strengths this year.
