Class activities for Friday, September 29

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Spelling: Today we had a preview of coming spelling words, we reviewed what a homograph is, and we looked at the prefixes: auto, bio, and graph.

Cursive: Cursive worksheets pp. 14-17 were reviewed and students completed a Cursive Quiz for their first cursive grade.

Reading: Today we discussed in small groups the open-ended questions from our reading of Esperanza Rising yesterday.

Writing: Students started a map to “dig up buried stories.” This map might have been of their home, a grandparent’s house, a former home, or anywhere where there are plenty of memories and stories.

Math: Today was math skills and students completed a 100-Fact Addition Test.

Science Inquiry: We began looking at ways to create testable questions. Today, we looked at these questions:

  • Is it possible to…?
  • When comparing ________ with _______, which will __________?
  • What if…?

In the future during Science Inquiry, students will create their own testable questions and then do tests and make discoveries.

Nana Puddin’: No, not what I had for lunch! This was the name of a character education assembly put on at our school today. Students learned to make good choices, stop bad choices, ask for help, and care about people for who they are on the inside.

Special thanks to Mt. Hope Church for sponsoring this assembly and bringing it all the way from Texas to McGrath!

There will also be special performances of the Nana Puddin’ production at Mt. Hope Church this weekend:

  • Saturday, 6:00 pm
  • Sunday, 10:00 am, 12:00 noon

Click here for driving directions, or visit Mt. Hope Church at their online home.

Behavior Update:

  • Yellows: two magnets
  • Oranges: none
  • Reds: none

Ask your student what kind of choices they made.

Notes:

  • Spirit Week is next week. Click here for a calendar of theme days.
  • We are looking for donations of cardboard tubes (toilet tissue, paper towel, wrapping paper) for class projects. The tubes can be sent in any time during the year; this project will be on-going. Thanks for any help you can give!
  • There is still some space left on our Room 130 Pride board. Let’s fill that thing up! If your student hasn’t yet brought in three unique “objects” about themselves, then please send them so that they can be put on display for all to see. We are looking for things like photos, postcards, papers, medals, or little trickets that can be put in bags and hung on the board. The only limitation is size, and being able to be attached somehow to a bulletin board. These objects can remain with us the whole year, or rotated out whenever the student wants.
