Friday, September 28th, 2018

Today was our BioBlitz field trip! We got to pet a chinchilla, sloth, and large snake! We learned out to identify and measure trees. We learned all about how to keep honeybees and how to collect honey. The class got to sample honeycomb and got their own sample of honey!

Class activities for Friday, September 7

Friday, September 7th, 2018

Highlights from today:

  • Today was Team Day! The students participated in several team-building activities that involved work together to reach a goal. Overall, the class did well and much better than last year!
  • We decided on our class agreement:
    • Turn and look at the speaker.
    • Use your time wisely.
    • Follow directions.
    • Talk at the right time.
    • Keep pace with others.
  • We reviewed our class behavior policy.
  • We finished playing a game called Win as Much as You Can. In this game, when teams agree to work together, everyone wins, but when some teams try to “get ahead” of the others, not only do some teams lose, but the whole class loses out. This game has 10 rounds and it took until the final round before the class started to think about how everyone could win, not just a few. We played again and learned from our mistakes. We learned that we need to put others first rather than try to be first all the time.

Class activities for Friday, March 16

Friday, March 16th, 2018

Spelling: We started to learn about rules for adding suffixes onto base words.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading skills and AR test practice day.

Writing: Students worked on drafting their novel again today. Your student should be at 80% of their count by tonight. The class average is 58%, so many students still have room to improve. You can see updated word counts at Jupiter Ed.

The novel project is due Wednesday, March 28. Homework is work on writing for at least 15 minutes.

Novel Writing Project 2018

The final piece of the 3rd Marking Period will be our final fiction project of the year. Students will write and publish a novel. Each student will write their own novel, with a word goal minimum of 1,000-4,000 words, based on their reading level (each student’s minimum writing goal is equal to their reading level multiplied by 500). The novels will be written in Google Docs (docs.google.com) to make use of the word count feature. Final novels will be uploaded to Lulu.com and published as paperback books, which can be purchased for reasonable prices. So yes, students will actually write and publish their own novels. This project is based on the National Novel Writing Month Young Writers program.

Math: Students worked on breaking apart large division problems by place value. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We started an experiment to find electrical conductors and insulators.

Social Studies: We had our Green Day contest and researched St. Patrick.
