Class activities for Friday, October 29

Friday, October 29th, 2010

Today was our Hawaiian Beach Bash! Students surfed, put on Hawaiian shirts, threw frisbees, tossed foam noodles, passed coconuts, ate pineapple slices, chewed on lemons and limes, had a hula-hoop contest, and danced to the Beach Boys! Later, it was Hawaiian pizza, Capri Suns and fruit kabobs! Thanks to all the families that helped with food, donations, decorations, games, setup and cleanup! Our party was totally tubular because of everyone’s help! Look for pictures and videos soon.

Reading: None today due to our Hawaiian Beach Bash.

Writing: Students worked on revising conferences and revising their writing piece.

A slightly fictionalized personal narrative is due Friday, November 5. Students should be revising at this time.

Math: None today due to our Hawaiian Beach Bash.

Science: Students started putting together a skeleton puzzle to see how the bones of the skeletal system are connected together.

Social Studies: None today due to our Hawaiian Beach Bash.

Spelling: None today due discussing procedures for assisting with school announcements.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: The class continued working on the reading day started in Literature Circles two days ago.

Writing: None today due to a science dissection of a sheep lung and liver.

A slightly fictionalized personal narrative is due Friday, November 5. Students should be revising at this time.

Math: We reviewed multiplying with the lattice method today. Homework is to finish Journal pp. 53-54.

Science: The class examined a dissected sheep lung and liver.

Social Studies: We learned about the lives of American Indians from the Northwest, Southwest, Plains and Eastern Woodlands.

Writing: None today due to a science dissection of chicken legs.

Math: We reviewed multiplying with decimals today and students completed a MiniQuiz.

Science: The class dissected chicken legs to look at the skin, fascia, muscle, tendons, cartilage and bones.

Social Studies: We learned about the lives of American Indians from the Northwest, Southwest, Plains and Eastern Woodlands.

Spelling: None today due to setting up a schedule for announcement assistants that our class will provide to the office in November.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on determining importance as a reading strategy.

Writing: None today due to technology.

A slightly fictionalized personal narrative is due Friday, November 5. Students should be drafting or revising at this time.

Math: We reviewed estimating products and multiplying with decimals today. Homework is to finish Journal pp. 50-52.

Science: We completed an experiment to learn about voluntary and involuntary muscles. Homework is to complete the experiment started in class.

Social Studies: We learned about the Eastern Woodland and Southeast American Indians. Homework is to finish up any reading notes on pp. 16-17  that were completed in class.

Spelling: Students made their Words to Learn lists from words they missed on the last spelling test. This is your student’s customized spelling list for the next test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles. Students completed an informational reading test today.

Writing: We talked about how authors can create a scene in their writing using these elements:

  1. Description of setting or characters;
  2. Dialogue;
  3. Character action; and,
  4. Saving the end for the end.

Students also worked on their drafts today.

A slightly fictionalized personal narrative is due Friday, November 5. Students should be drafting at this time.

Math: None today due to working on our courtyard garden. Students cleared out one box and we planted winter wheat.Clearing the way for winter wheat

Science: We completed an experiment to learn about our muscular system. Homework is to complete the Those Aching Muscles experiment.

Social Studies: We learned about the Plains Indians today.
