Class activities for Tuesday, January 17

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 60-62 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on determining importance as a reading strategy.

Writing: None today due to our technology time.

Math: Students completed a midyear math skills test today. Our class average improved from 23% to 33% correct on this test about these skills:

  • addition
  • subtraction
  • multiplication
  • division
  • decimals

Most students are showing that the understand addition and subtraction. However, their scores are being held back by not yet understanding multiplication, division and decimals.

To get your student ready for these skills, try having them spend some time at home working on Khan Academy. We use this at school and your student can practice these skills so they will be ready when we practice them again in class.

Science: None today.

Social Studies: We learned how outsourcing means US factory or office jobs are being moved to China, India and other countries.

Class activities for Friday, January 13

Friday, January 13th, 2012

Spelling: Today we learned about rules for adding suffixes onto words.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 57-59 were due today.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We learned that another kind of lively lead that can start a story is a thinking lead–the story begins with the character thinking about something.

The next piece of writing is a fiction story, due Tuesday, January 17 (new date). Students should be publishing at this time.

Math: None today due to STAR Friday.

Science: We reviewed our last experiment about matter. We learned that solids keep their shape and size, and can be piled up or stacked. Liquids change shape when put in new containers, but their sizes don’t change. Liquids can’t be piled up or stacked. Gases change shape or size depending on the container.

Social Studies: We learned more about about employment and unemployment. Homework is to finish the Employments Analysis Chart started in class.

Spelling: None today due to a character education lesson from Mrs. Alexander about bullying.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 57-59 are available and due Friday.

Reading: None today due to extra time with science.

Writing: We learned that another type of lively lead is one that starts a story with some dialogue.

The next piece of writing is a fiction story, due Tuesday, January 17 (new date). Students should be editing or publishing at this time.

Math: We practice subtracting across zeroes today. Homework is to finish Journal P4-5.

Science: Students completed an experiment about identifying different states of matter. Homework is to finish the “Matter in a Baggie” experiment if not done in class.

Social Studies: We learned about employment, unemployment and the labor force today. Homework is to finish the Employments Scenarios chart if not done in class.

Spelling: We learned that most suffixes are just added on to the base word:

  • runs
  • teachable
  • faster
  • fastest
  • quickly
  • flying

Cursive: Cursive pp. 57-59 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Students received new magazines today to practice informational reading.

Writing: We talked writing a lively lead to start a piece of writing. One type of lively lead is to use a snapshot lead that shows what a character, place or scene looks like.

The next piece of writing is a fiction story, due Tuesday, January 17 (new date). Students should be editing at this time.

Math: We practice subtracting today. Homework is to finish Journal P4-4.

Science: We the 3 Balloons experiment completed recently. We learned that solids have a specific shape and size, liquids have a changing shape but specific size, and gases have changing shapes and sizes.

Social Studies: None today due to our reading and math skills time.

Class activities for Tuesday, January 10

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

Spelling: None today due to extra time for writing.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 57-59 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Students turned in their previous Literature Circles books and will receive new magazines soon.

Writing: We talked about explaining new characters with visual details, actions, background information and details about who they are.

The next piece of writing is a fiction story, due Tuesday, January 17 (new date). Students should be editing at this time.

Math: None today due to an assembly from Coach Steve from the Detroit Pistons.

Science: We participated in a live webchat with a student engineer from Cornell University. He is working on a project called KickSat, which will launch several hundred palm-sized satellites into space. We were even mentioned in the webchat when one of our questions was answered! We will be learning about space after our unit on matter is finished.

Social Studies: We compared what happened to the gold mines of Rhyolite, Nevada to copper mines in Michigan.
