Class activities for Tuesday, February 7

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

Spelling: None today due to getting new seats.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading and discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: None today due to our technology time.

Our next writing project is a persuasive “letter to the editor” about a way to improve our school or community. We’re reviewing core democratic values this week and students will start their letter next week.  Here is more information about this project, and here’s a checklist to help with writing the letter. This piece will be due Monday, February 27.

Math: We practiced solving problems by thinking about the reasonableness of an answer. Homework is to finish Journal P5-6. We’ll have a math test Thursday about these ideas:

  • Multiplying by tens and hundreds
  • Breaking apart to multiply
  • Using mental math to multiply
  • Estimating by rounding
  • Problem solving by thinking about reasonable answers
There is a practice test on p. 132 in the math book.

Science: We learned about important temperature benchmarks (freezing, room temperature, body temperature, boiling). Homework is to finish the Thermometer Review page.

Social Studies: We learned about ways to locate the US by comparing it to the location of other countries, the equator, the Prime Meridian, the hemispheres of the globe and the continents. Homework is to finish the Location of the US activity if not done in class. There will be a MiniQuiz soon about locating continents.

Behavior Update:

  • Yellow magnets: 0
  • Orange magnets: 0
  • Red magnets: 0
  • STAR Awards: 0
  • Magnets moved this week (goal: 10): 3

Class activities for Monday, February 6

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Spelling: We reviewed common spelling patterns for the /j/ sound: gy, gi, ge, j and dge. We also learned that the dge pattern usually follows a short vowel sound, but the ge pattern follows a long vowel sound.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students were introduced to our next writing project, a persuasive letter. Students will be writing a “letter to the editor” about a way to improve their school or community. We’re reviewing core democratic values this week and students will start their letter next week.  Here is more information about this project, and here’s a checklist to help with writing the letter. This piece will be due Monday, February 27.

Math: We practiced estimating products by rounding. Homework is to finish Journal P5-5.

Science: We reviewed measuring volume today. We also reviewed the water cycle: evaporation, condensation, precipitation.

Social Studies: We learned about ways to locate the US by comparing it to the location of other countries, the equator, the Prime Meridian, the hemispheres of the globe and the continents. There will be a MiniQuiz tomorrow about locating continents.

Behavior Update:

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students received new Literature Circles books today.

Writing: Today was the final school day to work on the next writing piece, a Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook. The project is due Monday, February 6. Students are publishing their adventure as a website at sites.mrhowd.com. Students should be nearing the completion of their project at this time. See here for a complete list of resources. Homework is to finish the writing piece.

Class activities for Thursday, February 2

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

Spelling: We learned that some sounds are spelled different. For example, the words yes and ready both have a short e sound, but different letters make that sound in each word.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students previewed new Literature Circles books today

Writing: Students worked on their next writing piece, a Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook. The project is due Monday, February 6. Students are publishing their adventure as a website at sites.mrhowd.com. Students should be nearing the completion of their project at this time. See here for a complete list of resources.

Math: We reviewed multiplying with mental math using a trick called “compensation.”  Here’s an example:

  1. To multiply 27 x 4, first round the largest number to an easier number:
    1. 27 rounds to 30
  2. The new problem is 30 x 4
    1. This is now an easier problem that can be solved mentally. The answer is 120.
  3. Now to compensate. Since we rounded up to 30, we need to move back down to the actual answer:
    1. Since we rounded 27 up to 30, we went 3 over our answer.
    2. We are multiplying by 4, so we went up 3 x 4 too much. We are 3 x 4 = 12 over our answer.
    3. Remove 12 from the answer of 120.
    4. The answer is 120 – 12 = 108.

Homework is to complete Journal R5-4 to continue practicing this skill.

Science: Students completed a science experiment about measuring liquid volume and mixing colored water to create a spectrum. Homework is to finish the Color Spectrum experiment if not done in class.

Social Studies: We reviewed the continents and features of the globe today. Homework is to finish the Label the Continents review if not done in class.
