Class activities for Monday, May 14

Spelling: We reviewed irregular verbs:

  • sell/sold
  • build/built
  • keep/kept
  • stick/stuck
  • see/saw

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students read Literature Circles plays to work on oral reading fluency.

Writing: We learned about how to use fragments to create a poem. Here is a fragment poem we wrote together:

Bus Ride to Mackinac

Kids talking
Children playing
People waiting
Watching movies
Playing card games
Bus bumping
Sun rising
Excitement growing
Bridge appearing
People cheering!

Students also continued to work on their poems. A collection of poems will be due into portfolios on Monday, May 21.

Math: We reviewed how to convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers. We also practiced adding and subtracting mixed numbers. Homework is to finish Journal P12-7. Here is the Khan Academy skill for adding and subtracting mixed numbers.

Science: We started to learn about requirements for life. We made a list of requirements and will test them using plants this week.

Social Studies: We started to learn about why it is important to have a government and laws.

Spelling: We reviewed when and how to use apostrophes today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: None today due to an assembly about positive character.

Writing: We talked about how to turn a memory into a poem. Students also continued to work on their poems.

A collection of poems will be due into portfolios on Monday, May 21.

Math: We reviewed how to convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers. Here is the Khan Academy skill for improper fractions and mixed numbers for extra practice or review.

Science: We finished learning about space today and will start our last unit on life next week.

Social Studies: We finished learning about physical and human geography today and will start our last unit on government next week.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: None today due to discussion of our Mackinac trip.

Writing: Students completed prewriting conferences today and continued to work on poems.

A collection of poems will be due into portfolios on Monday, May 21.

Math: We learned about how to convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers. Homework is to finish Journal P12-6. Here is the Khan Academy skill for improper fractions and mixed numbers for extra practice or review.

Science: Students completed a district science test about matter and energy.

Social Studies: None today due to our math and reading skills time.

Spelling: Today was a preview of upcoming spelling words.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We learned that one way to make a poem fresh and musical is to use repetition of words or lines.

Students continued to work on their collection of poems that will be due into portfolios on Monday, May 21.

Math: We learned about subtraction fractions with common denominators. Homework is to finish Journal P12-3 and 12-4, even-numbered problems.

Science: None today.

Social Studies: We continued to learn about push and pull factors related to immigration to the United States.

Writing: We learned that all poetry has at least one of these ingredients:

  • emotion

Students also started writing their own poems. A collection of poems will be due into portfolios on Monday, May 21.

Math: We learned about adding fractions with common denominators. Homework is to finish Journal P12-1 and 12-2.

Science: We finished learning about how the earth is a unique place in our very large universe.

Social Studies: We learned about push and pull factors related to immigration to the United States.
