Class activities for Wednesday, October 31

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Spelling: We played a game to review spelling patterns for the /k/ sound: ck, c, k, qu, ch. A spelling test over Unit 2 will be tomorrow. Spelling patterns for the /k/ sound will be the skill tested.

Cursive: Cursive pages 32-34 are available and due on Friday.

Reading: None today.

Writing: Students learned how to do editing conferences today. Students should be editing their piece of writing, which is due this Friday, November 2.

Math: None today.

Science: None today.

Social Studies: We started learning about the West, including the Rocky Mountains, a dry climate, and fertile valleys.

Hawaiian Beach Bash: Thanks to everyone who donated and helped with the Beach Bash! Everyone had a great time eating Hawaiian pizza, making fruit kabobs, and playing crazy games involving Hawaiian shirts, frisbees, coconuts, pineapple, plantains, surfing, hoola-hooping and dancing!

Spelling: We reviewed spelling patterns for the /k/ sound: ck, c, k, qu, ch.  A spelling test over Unit 2 will on Thursday. Spelling patterns for the /k/ sound will be the skill tested.

Cursive: Cursive pages 32-34 are available and due on Friday. 

Reading: Students received new Literature Circles groups. These are the books we are reading:

  • A Bad Beginning
  • Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing
  • The Orange Outlaw
  • Tuck Everlasting
  • The Westing Game
  • The Secret School

Writing: None today due to a double helping of reading! Students should be editing their piece of writing, which is due on November 2.

Math: Students played Data Top It to practice data landmarks: minimum, maximum, range, and mode.

Science: None today due to art.

Social Studies: Students worked on labeling and coloring a map of US regions. Homework is to finish labeling the states and coloring each region.

Class activities for Monday, October 29

Monday, October 29th, 2007

Spelling: None today due to getting new seats. A spelling test over Unit 2 will be Thursday.

Cursive: Cursive pages 32-34 are available and due Friday.

Reading: None today due to technology.

Writing: Students saw that using interesting, specific verbs to describe action helps the reader to picture the writing. Today was the last planned revising day. Students should be nearing the end of revising or starting to edit. Some students are behind schedule; ask your student to show you what they’ve done so far. The next piece of writing, a personal narrative, is due on November 2. This will be the final writing grade of the marking period.

Math: We used boxes of raisins to make a class tally chart and then we found out the data landmarks of maximum, minimum, range and mode. Homework is to finish Journal pp. 35-36.

Science: Students tested various circuits to see which arrangements of battery, bulb and wires would light the bulb. Homework is to complete the Repair Manual worksheet, describing what was wrong with the circuits that didn’t light.

Social Studies: We took notes in our minibooks today about the Southwest.
