June 8th, 2010
Class activities for Tuesday, June 8
Spelling: None today.
Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.
Reading: None today due to completing a year-end district math test.
Writing: Students continued to work on their Find It, Decide It project, due Friday, June 11.
Resources:
- Find It, Decide It project guidelines
- Our project discussion on Google Wave (your student may need to log in for you to view this)
Math: We reviewed calculating area and perimeter. To practice this, students were asked to design a square-foot garden. Here are the rules:
- Design three different garden boxes
- Make one a square
- Make one a rectangle (not a square)
- Make one another shape (but only use right angles)
- Plant three kinds of fruits or vegetables in each box
- In order to know how many vegetables of each kind to purchase, calculate the area for each vegetable.
- In order to know how much soil to buy, calculate the area of each box.
- In order to know how much lumber to buy for the boxes, calculate the perimeter of each box.
- In order to know how many marigolds to plant around the vegetables to keep the rabbits away, calculate the perimeter of each fruit or vegetable.
Homework is to finish their garden plan.
Science: We started a Science Court investigation about fossils. Today’s question: Are all fossils made of bone? Homework is to finish the Science Court page if not done in class.
Social Studies: We learned that the Federal government has some powers (making money, declaring war), the state governments have some powers (establishing schools, making laws about driver’s licenses) and some powers are shared by both levels (collecting taxes, making laws).
