Class activities for Monday, October 11

Monday, October 11th, 2010

Spelling: We reviewed prefixes, suffixes and base words today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on visualizing as a reading strategy.

Writing: We reviewed the three main components of a story:

  1. Characters (the people of the story)
  2. Plot (the action of the story)
  3. Setting (the places of the story)

Every story, even personal narratives, have these main ingredients.

A personal narrative is due Friday, October 15. Students should be revising at this time.

Math: We reviewed the trade-first method of subtraction today. Homework is to finish Journal pp. 34-35.

Science: We wrote notes about the circulatory system and started reading about the respiratory system.

Social Studies: We started a preview of American Indian cultural regions by thinking about how America can be divided into regions based on which sports people play (canoeing, surfing, skiing). Homework is to finish Preview 3 p. 15.

Spelling: Students completed their mini-posters about rules for making plural nouns.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Today was a work day for students to complete their drafts or spend time revising.

A personal narrative is due Friday, October 15. Students should be revising at this time.

Math: We reviewed partial sums and standard addition.

Science: None today due to art.

Social Studies: Students completed a Geography Challenge to review continents, oceans, latitude and longitude.

Spelling: We reviewed rules for making plural nouns:

  1. Just add an s (cats, dogs, pencils)
  2. Add es to words that end in ch, sh, ss, z and x (churches, lashes, glasses, waltzes, boxes)
  3. Change the y to i and add es (cherries, stories)

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on making connections as a reading strategy.

Writing: Students completed revising conferences today.

A personal narrative is due Friday, October 15. Students should be drafting or revising at this time.

Math: We reviewed partial sums and standard addition today. Homework is to finish Journal pp. 32-33.

Science: We took our resting and active pulse rates and noticed that our circulatory systems work harder during and after exercise. We also graded and discussed the review page from yesterday.

Social Studies: Students completed a Geography Challenge to review continents, oceans, latitude and longitude.
