Class activities for Monday, October 18

Monday, October 18th, 2010

Spelling: We reviewed rules for creating plural nouns today. This will be the skill tested on Thursday’s spelling test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in literature Circles.

Writing: We watched a dramatic reading of Thank You, Mr. Falker, by Patricia Polacco, to see how this author turns her personal narratives into slightly fictionalized stories. Students also spent some time prewriting for their next piece.

A slightly fictionalized personal narrative is due Friday, November 5. Students should be prewriting at this time.

Math: We reviewed data landmarks (minimum, maximum, range, mode, median) today and included a new one, mean. Students were taught how to calculate the mean, or average, by adding the numbers in a data set and dividing the sum by the number of data points added. Homework is to practice using these data landmarks with an activity on Journal pp. 39-40.

Science: We completed two experiments today to learn more about the digestive system:

  1. We dissolved whole and crushed candy in warm water to see which one dissolved faster. We noticed that the crushed candy dissolved faster. This model showed us that chewed up food dissolves faster in our digestive systems.
  2. We chewed an unsalted cracker and left it in our mouths for five minutes. The enzymes in our saliva started to break down the starches in the cracker into sugars, which we could detect by a slightly sweet taste.

Homework is to finish the Saliva Makes It Sweet experiment questions.

Social Studies: We learned about the Northwest Coast and California Intermountain American Indians today. Homework is to finish the History Mystery notes on p. 16.
