Class activities for Friday, January 14

Friday, January 14th, 2011

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was the first planning and reading day for our new Literature Circles books.

Writing: We continued to talk about different kinds of leads that can begin a story.

Our next piece of writing, a fiction piece, will be due Friday, January 21. Students should be revising at this time.

Math: Students completed a division MiniQuiz today.

Science: Students worked on a science MiniQuiz today.

Social Studies: None on Fridays.

Spelling: Today was a spelling and skill test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students received new Literature Circles books today.

Writing: We talked about different kinds of leads that can begin a story. Today, we looked at the lead from A Christmas Carol and noticed that it was a thinking lead. Here’s the lead. You can also see the book below:

Our next piece of writing, a fiction piece, will be due Friday, January 21. Students should be finished with their draft and revising at this time.

Math: We reviewed the partial-quotients method of division today and talked about dividing with decimals. Homework is to finish Journal pp. 113-114.

Science: We reviewed the sensitivity experiment from earlier in the week. A MiniQuiz over the first three investigations will be tomorrow.

Social Studies: We learned about the Plymouth colony today.

Spelling: None today due to a Character Education lesson with Mrs. Alexander. We will have a spelling test later in the week.

Reading: The final three groups performed their Literature Circles plays today.

Writing: None today due to technology.

Our next piece of writing, a fiction piece, will be due Friday, January 21. Students should be drafting at this time.

Math: We reviewed the partial-quotients method of division today. Homework is to finish Journal pp. 106-108.

Science: We completed an experiment to measure the sensitivity of  different parts of our arms (fingers, palm, forearm). Homework is to finish the analysis questions on p. 24.

Social Studies: We continued to learn about the Jamestown colony.

Monday, January 10th, 2011

Spelling: We reviewed the common spelling patterns for the /ou/ sound: ow and ou. This will be skill tested on this week’s spelling test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Three groups performed their Literature Circles plays today.

Writing: We talked about writing dialogue so that it is not just small talk or chit chat. Good dialogue helps the reader to understand the action of the story and what the characters are like.

Our next piece of writing, a fiction piece, will be due Friday, January 21. Students should be drafting at this time.

Math: We reviewed division facts today and learned a method for calculating mental math division facts. Homework is to finish Journal pp. 103-105.

Science: We reviewed the analysis questions from the activity about testing medicines.

Social Studies: We worked on some notes about Roanoke and started to learn about Jamestown. Homework is to finish Notebook p. 33.
