Class activities for Thursday, October 20
Spelling: We learned about homorgraphs, words that are spelling the same but have different definitions or pronunciations. The word, wind, is a homograph is these sentences:
- The wind is strong.
- Please wind the clock.
Cursive: Cursive pp. 24-26 are available and due Friday.
Reading: We reviewed the idea that fluent readers read with the correct speed, an interesting tone, and volume that helps the listeners to hear the reading. Students practiced this by selecting a passage to read to the class as a monologue. They selected a passage today and practiced reading with speed, tone and volume to themselves and to a partner. Students will perform their monologues to the class tomorrow.
Writing: We talked about writing should use precise nouns in their writing by using words that are specific and help the reader to understand the story. For example:
- Write rust, not brown stuff,
- Write instructional manual, not car booklet,
- Write jack, not thing to lift up the car.
Students also completed prewriting conferences today. Homework is to finish the prewriting conference if not completed in class.
A personal narrative, slightly fictionalized, is due into portfolios on Friday, November 4. Students should be finishing prewriting and ready to start their draft at this time.
Math: We practiced problem solving using multiplication and division today. Homework is to finish Journal P1-10.
Science: We did an activity today to notice that a magnet can be used to magnetize a paper clip. In this case, the paper clip acts like a magnet and can even attract another paper clip.
Social Studies: We learned that the movement of money, goods, services, and labor between businesses and people is called circular flow.
- Yellow magnets: 3
