Class activities for Thursday, December 8

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Spelling: Today was a spelling and skill test.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 48-50 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Students finished their books today and will work on projects to share their book with the class next.

Writing: We talked about how to create a scene in writing by including these elements:

  • dialogue
  • description of action, setting and characters
  • senses
  • not giving away the ending too fast

The next piece of writing is a fiction story, due Friday, December 16. Students should be revising at this time.

Math: We reviewed rounding today.

Science: We learned about electrical safety today by visiting Electrical Safety World. We’ll have a science test tomorrow about magnetism and electricity.

Social Studies: None today.

Spelling: None today due to the late start. We will have a spelling test on Thursday. The skill tested will be about digraphs.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 48-50 are available and due Friday.

Reading: None today due to extra time with science.

Writing: None today due to the late start.

The next piece of writing is a fiction story, due Friday, December 16. Students should be revising at this time.

Math: None today due to art.

Science: We learned that moving electricity creates magnetism. Even electricity moving through a wire to light a bulb will produce a small magnetic field that can be detected when a compass is placed near the wire. We also learned that gadolinium is a magnetic metal, joined by iron, cobalt and nickel.

Social Studies: None today due to the late start.

Math: Students completed a MiniQuiz about comparing, ordering and rounding numbers.

Spelling: Students practiced writing words with digraphs today. Digraphs are two letters that make one sound, such as the ph in elephant. We will have a spelling test on Thursday. The skill tested will be about digraphs.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 48-50 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students worked on their draft today.

The next piece of writing is a fiction story, due Friday, December 16. Students should be drafting at this time.

Math: None today due to extra time with social studies..

Science: We learned that electromagnets need three parts:

  1. A source of electricity
  2. A wire coil (solenoid)
  3. A magnetic core

Social Studies: We reviewed the idea that it is usually faster and easier to use an assembly line to build products, and to divide the labor up among many workers.

Spelling: We finished reviewing rules for capitalization:

  • Capitalize specific names, places, and titles
  • Capitalize days, months, holidays, but not seasons.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 45-47 are available and due Monday.

Reading: None today.

Writing: We talked about developing characters to make them seam real by using dialogue, action, description and the reaction of other characters.

The next piece of writing is a fiction story, due Friday, December 16. Students should be drafting at this time.

Math: None today due to STAR Friday.

Science: We did an experiment to learn that salt water is an electrical conductor, but not pure water. We also made an electromagnet and learned that the strength of the electromagnet increases when more coils of wire are wound around the magnetic core of the electromagnet.

Social Studies: None today.
