Class activities for Thursday, December 15

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

Spelling: We reviewed soft syllable ending words: fountain, captain, curtain, and again.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 51-53 are available and due Friday.

Reading: None today due to rehearsal for the fourth grade musical.

Writing: We talked about stopping run-on sentences by using periods to separate ideas into their own sentences.

The next piece of writing is a fiction story, due Monday, December 19. Students should be editing or publishing at this time.

Math: None today due to rehearsal for the fourth grade musical.

Science: We talked about how more electricity added to a circuit will transform into more light and heat.

Social Studies: We started to learn about the global economy and how it is affected by prices, labor, and quality.

Spelling: We learned that the word certain has a soft syllable ending that makes it sound different that the word main. Other soft syllable endings:

  • fountain
  • captain
  • curtain
  • again

Cursive: Cursive pp. 51-53 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Students worked on Literature Circles projects to share their books with the class.

Writing: Students worked on editing conferences today.

The next piece of writing is a fiction story, due Monday, December 19. Students should be editing at this time.

Math: None today due to rehearsal for the fourth grade musical.

Science: We talked about conductors and insulators of heat. Just like metals are good conductors of electricity, they are also good conductors of heat.

Social Studies: None today due to our reading and math skills time.

Spelling: We learned common spelling patterns for the /s/ sound: s, ss, sc, cy, ce, ci. 

Cursive: Cursive pp. 51-53 are available and due Friday.

Reading: None today due to rehearsal for the fourth grade musical.

Writing: None on Tuesdays due to our time with technology.

The next piece of writing is a fiction story, due Friday, December 16. Students should be editing at this time.

Math: Students completed a MiniQuiz today about rounding.

Science: None today due to visiting the Holiday Shop.

Social Studies: None on Tuesdays due to our math skills work time.

Monday, December 12th, 2011

Spelling: Today was a preview of upcoming spelling words.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 51-53 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Students worked on planning a project to share their Literature Circles books with the class.

Writing: We talked about using visual details and senses to make the settings of a story come to life.

The next piece of writing is a fiction story, due Friday, December 16. Students should be revising at this time.

Math: None today due to rehearsal for the fourth grade musical.

Science: Students worked on an experiment about what happens to light and heat when more batteries are added to a light bulb circuit. Homework is to finish the What is Light? experiment if not done in class.

Social Studies: We watched some video clips about the assembly lines of various auto manufacturers. We noticed that the workers specialized and divided the labor so that they were only working one one section of a car. Students also completed a MiniQuiz about these ideas.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 48-50 are available and due Monday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles. Students finished their books today and will work on projects to share their book with the class next.

Writing: We reviewed creating scenes in writing by including dialogue, description, senses and not giving away the ending too fast. Students also worked on revising conferences today. Homework is to finish the revising conference of not done in class.

The next piece of writing is a fiction story, due Friday, December 16. Students should be revising at this time.

Math: We reviewed rounding today.

Science: Students completed a science test today about magnetism and electricity.

Social Studies: None today.
