November 2nd, 2012
Class activities for Friday, November 2
Spelling: None today.
Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays. This week’s assignment will be due on Monday.
Reading: Students continued to work on Literature Circles projects to share their books with the class.
Writing: Today was a publishing day in writing.
The next piece of writing, a fiction story, will be due on Monday, November 26.
Math: We continued to practice multiplying by using the distributive property to break larger numbers into pieces. Today, students used the grid method to multiply using the distributive property. Here’s an example of the grid method.
To multiply 34 × 13, break the problem into (30 + 4) x (10 + 3):
30 4 10 300 40 3 90 12
Then, add the partial products: 300 + 90 + 40 + 12 = 442. Homework is to finish Journal P3-5 started in class.
Science: We wrote notes about the respiratory system. Homework is to finish the Breathtaking System page.
Social Studies: We started a unit on European explorers. Today we thought about all the tools involved in planning and taking a trip, and how hard it would have been for the explorers to travel without a lot of the tools we have today.
