Class activities for Wednesday, December 12

Wednesday, December 12th, 2012

Spelling: We reviewed rules for adding suffixes onto base words today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: None today due to discussing some behavior issues.

The next piece of writing, a fiction piece, is due Friday, December 14. Students should be editing at this point.

Math: We practiced dividing using two-digit divisors. Homework is to finish Journal P5-5.

Science: We completed an activity about identifying inherited or acquired traits. Homework is to finish the analyze and conclude questions on the experiment page. See if you can tell the traits apart:

Social Studies: We continued to learn about explorers, which country sponsored them, where they explored, when they arrived, what motivated them and what impact they had.

Spelling: None today due to our visit to the Holiday Shop.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: We discussed ways to reduce antisocial behavior and disrespect in our class and school. This is a lesson all classes were learning.

Writing: None today due to our visit to the Holiday Shop.

The next piece of writing, a fiction piece, is due Friday, December 14. Students should be editing at this point.

Math: We practiced dividing using two-digit divisors. Homework is to finish Journal P5-4.

Science: We talked about how both acquired and inherited traits affect living organisms. 

Social Studies: None today due to our math skills time.

Spelling: We reviewed the idea that prefixes are letters added onto the beginning of a word that change its meaning. Today, we practiced with the re- prefix.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading today in Literature Circles. Students read about explorers from their social studies book to help with the notes were are taking about them.

Writing: None today due to our technology time.

The next piece of writing, a fiction piece, is due Friday, December 14. Students should be revising at this point.

Math: We practiced estimating quotients with two-digit divisors. Homework is to finish Journal P5-2.

Science: None today due to our math skills time.

Social Studies: We completed notes about several explorers, learning about which country sponsored them, wher they explored, when they arrived, what motivated them and what impact they had.

Class activities for Friday, December 7

Friday, December 7th, 2012

Spelling: None today due to extra time with spelling yesterday.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students completed an informational reading test today.

Writing: We talked about inventing or researching specific details to fill in gaps in writing. Specific names and places help the writing to feel more realistic.

The next piece of writing, a fiction piece, is due Friday, December 14. Students should be revising at this point.

Math: None today due to STAR Friday.

Science: We learned about acquired and inherited traits. Acquired traits are learned or happen after birth, such as piercing ears or learning to smile a lot. Inherited traits are genetic and come from parents, such as attached earlobes or having dimples.

Social Studies: We learned about different explorers that came to the New World. Homework is to finish the notes started in class about each group’s assigned explorer.

Spelling: We learned about rules for making plural words.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students have finished reading their magazines. Today, groups started practicing plays they will read to the class to practice fluency.

Writing: Today was a revising work day.

The next piece of writing, a fiction piece, is due Friday, December 14. Students should be revising their draft at this point.

Math: We learned about how to use patterns to divide larger numbers. For example, the problem 250 / 50 can be written as 25 tens / 5 tens. Now that the problem is rewritten, it’s easier to see that the problem is the same as 25 / 5, so the answer is 5. Rewriting division problems using tens and hundreds makes the problem easier to divide. Homework is to finish Journal P5-1.

Science: We completed an activity to model how traits are passed from one generation to the next. Homework is to finish the Generation of Traits experiment.

Social Studies: None today due to a music aptitude test from Marshall Music.
