Class activities for Thursday, May 2

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on making connections and summarizing as reading strategies.

Writing: We read more poems today from the book, Hate that Cat. A collection of poems with be due Friday, May 17.

Math: We practiced multiplying fractions. Homework is to finish Journal P11-4.

Science: We started an experiment about how speed affects braking distance in a vehicle. Today was also the first session of our Jet Toy Challenge. All the 5th grade students are competing in teams to build a balloon powered car. Local engineers from GM are helping the students design and test their cars.

Social Studies: We learned about the Stamp Act and the Boston Massacre. Homework is to finish the reading notes for those two topics.

Spelling: None today due to the late start.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: None today due to extra time with science.

Writing: We read a poem by William Carlos Williams and then students wrote their own poems in the same style, focusing on emotion and imagery. A collection of poems with be due Friday, May 17.

Math: We practiced estimating products of fractions.

Science: Students completed an an activity about applying balanced and unbalanced forces to a wooden block. Force meters were used to measure the forces. Homework is to finish the analysis questions on p. 40 started in class.

Social Studies: None today due to the late start.
