Class activities for Thursday, May 9

Thursday, May 9th, 2013

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on breaking unfamiliar words into chunks to help read the words.

Writing: We talked about turning a memory into a poem today. A collection of poems will be due Friday, May 17.

Math: We practiced thinking about multiplication of fractions as scaling (making something larger or smaller). Homework is to finish Journal P11-7.

Science: Students work on their jet toy car that they are building in teams.

Social Studies: We learned about Patrick Henry, the patriot that said, “Give me liberty or give me death!” We’ll have a quiz tomorrow about patriots and loyalists. Here is a practice test for review.

Wednesday, May 8th, 2013

Spelling: Students started marking Words to Learn lists from words missed on the last spelling test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We learned about using a metaphor in a poem. We read about a poem that used the metaphor of middle school as a pinball game. Students also continued to work on poems containing imagery, music, or emotion. A collection of poems with be due Friday, May 17.

Math: We reviewed multiplying mixed numbers today.

Science: We did an experiment to see how the number of daylight hours and the angle of the sun in the sky change during different seasons. Homework is to finish the graph started in class and the analysis questions on p. 26.

Social Studies: We learned about famous patriots that argued for independence from Great Britain. Homework is to finish the reading notes on notebook p. 3 about famous patriots.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on summarizing and making connections as strategies.

Writing: Students continued to work on poems containing imagery, music, or emotion. A collection of poems with be due Friday, May 17.

Math: We practiced multiplying mixed numbers today. Homework is to finish Journal P11-6.

Science: We reviewed our recent force and motion experiments completed last week.

Social Studies: None today due to our math and reading skills practice time.

Writing: We reviewed the basic “ingredients” of poetry: imagery, music, and emotion. All poems have at least one of those ingredients.

A collection of poems with be due Friday, May 17.

Math: Students worked on a district math test today.

Science: None today due to our math skills practice time.

Social Studies: We learned that Loyalists were people that were loyal to the king of Great Britain before the war started.

Friday, May 3rd, 2013

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We are learning about poetry this unit. A collection of poems with be due Friday, May 17.

Math: We practiced multiplying fractions to find the area of a rectangle. Homework is to finish Journal P11-5.

Science: Students completed an experiment to test if speed affected braking distance. Homework is to finish the analysis questions on p. 44. Students had to return their science books today, but the analysis questions for the final three experiments can be found here.

Social Studies: We learned about the Boston Tea Party and the Intolerable Acts. Homework is to finish the reading notes for those two topics if not done in class. Students also completed a quiz over the issues leading up to the Revolutionary War.
