Class activities for Friday, September 5

Friday, September 5th, 2014

We finished our week with more team building activities

Today was Team Day! Students had to work together to move, untie knots, drop hula hoops, and stand on a shrinking sheet! The class solved the challenges much quicker than last year!

Later, we played People Bingo to learn more about each other.

We made a class agreement, deciding on these things that everyone should do each day:

  1. Turn and look at the speaker.
  2. Follow directions nicely.
  3. Be kind.
  4. Talk at the right time.
  5. Be a STAR (stop, think, act, review).

We decided on our class rule: Follow the High Fives.

We ended with a final teamwork challenge, called Teamwork Towers. Each group received 50 straws and 5 feet of tape. The challenge was to build the tallest free-standing tower that couldn’t be blown over. Congratulations to Team 5 for the tallest tower, measuring 86 cm.

Class activities for Thursday, September 4

Thursday, September 4th, 2014

We focused on team building today. Here are some highlights:

  • We played a game called, “Win as Much as You Can.” The game is built so that teams that compete against other teams get ahead at their expense. The only way for everyone to win this game is to put others first. A group working 100% as a team could earn a maximum of $5,000, and our class earned $400, so you can see that we struggled with not putting others first.
  • We selected our class mission statement: “All students in Room 130 will do their best and get ready for sixth grade.”
  • We selected our class goals:
    • To improve our class reading level by at least one year.
    • To improve our class math level by at least one year.
    • To reach a goal we set for class AR points earned from reading books.
  • We played another game called Pyramids. Students were challenged to work as a team to stack cups into a pyramid using only a rubberband with strings tied on. The students had to open the rubberband by pulling the strings, and use the rubberband to grab and stack the cups (see pics below).

Class activities for Wednesday, September 3

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2014

We continued with more “setting the table” for the rest of the school year. Here are some highlights:

  • We got new seats.
  • We elected team captains and reviewed class jobs.
  • We reviewed school expectations for behavior on the bus, in the office, in the hallways, and at recess.
  • Students took the Mr. Howd test, and most failed (again!)
  • We talked about crashing and learning. It’s okay to crash and make a mistake if you learn from them and fix it for next time. Crashes help people learn and get better. It’s not okay to crash the same way over and over, that’s a bad habit, but crashing and learning is how you get better. See the video below about this.
  • We talked about how our mouths speak what overflows from our hearts. There are some things that shouldn’t come out of our mouths, so that means there are some things we should keep thinking about over and over. Here’s a short list we came up with:
    • Rumors
    • Gossip
    • Boyfriend/girlfriend/romatic love talk
    • Bullying
    • Making fun of differences
    • Taking joy in the mistakes of others

Class activities for Tuesday, September 2

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2014

Welcome back to school! Today was filled with school start-up activities and procedures. Here are some highlights:

  • We played a game to share some news from the summer.
  • We took a tour of our new planners. Parents, look in the planners for a bunch of paperwork for you to fill out. That’s your homework!
  • We attended gym and music and an assembly about the new year.
  • We got lockers and partners.
    • Since our lockers are small and each person has a partner, one of the partners can create more space for their things by bringing in a reusable grocery bag that can be hung from one of the hooks in the locker. That bag can store books and belongings.
