Class activities for Thursday, October 30

Thursday, October 30th, 2014

Spelling: We reviewed the idea that suffixes change the meaning of base words. We looked at words ending in –er today. That suffix can mean different things:

  • It can mean more than, as in stronger.
  • It can mean one who, as in teacher.
  • It sometimes is just part of the word, as in letter.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays. This week’s assignment will be due on Monday.

Reading: Students worked on a STAR Reading test today.

Writing: We talked about using a recurring detail in a story that shows up more than once. Having a detail appear in the beginning and then later in the story can tie the story together and make it more organized.

A personal narrative, slightly fictionalized, is due Friday, October 31. Your student should be prewriting by now.

Math: Students practiced math skills using MobyMax today.

Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes or more using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Today was Body Systems Survivor! I asked students to vote a body system off the body. The class found out that it was very difficult to chose a body system to leave the body, since all of they are necessary.

Social Studies: We talked about the tools and reasons that led to explorers coming to the New World.

Our Mission:
All students in Room 130 will do their best and get ready for 6th grade.

From the McGrath Partnership:

The Scrip program will be starting up again Monday, November 3rd and orders will need to be submitted that morning.  Scrip is a great way to make money towards student’s individual field trip accounts.  Scrip is simply a term that means “substitute money.” At McGrath, Scrip fundraising is a no-selling program that allows families to raise money directly for their student by using gift cards, or scrip, to pay for everyday purchases. More information on Scrip can be found on McGrath’s webpage – click the Scrip tab at the top of the page.
