Spelling: Today was our class spelling bee. Congratulations to Mwuena, Kyle, and Peyton for advancing to the school spelling bee!

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Four groups of students performed Literature Circles plays to practice reading fluency.

Writing: None today due to extra time with Literature Circles. We’ll work extra on writing tomorrow.

Our next writing project is a Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook. Students will write a fiction adventure story with choices that the reader can make. Each choice can change how the story turns out. Students will publish their adventure as a website at sites.mrhowd.com. See below for more details.

This project is due Friday, January 16. Students should be working on their draft now.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Two groups of students performed Literature Circles plays to practice reading fluency.

Writing: Students continued to draft their adventure story today. We also looked at some sample endings and noticed that the endings make the reader infer what is happening (“the last thing you see is the sharks jaws moving closer to you”).

Our next writing project is a Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook. Students will write a fiction adventure story with choices that the reader can make. Each choice can change how the story turns out. Students will publish their adventure as a website at sites.mrhowd.com. See below for more details.

Class activities for Tuesday, January 6

Tuesday, January 6th, 2015

Spelling: We reviewed adding prefixes and suffixes onto words to change the meaning.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students continued to practice reading fluency today by reading a play they will perform later in the week.

Writing: Students continued to draft their adventure story today. We walked about how each page of the story is like a game level, and players like games with more and challenging levels. That means a reader will like longer scenes and more choices to choose from.

Our next writing project is a Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook. Students will write a fiction adventure story with choices that the reader can make. Each choice can change how the story turns out. Students will publish their adventure as a website at sites.mrhowd.com. See below for more details.

Class activities for Monday, January 5

Monday, January 5th, 2015

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students practiced reading fluency today by reading a play they will perform later in the week.

Writing: Students continued to draft their adventure story today. We also looked at an example story and noticed that each page of the story was like a scene, and each scene had at least two kinds of details (action, visual, dialogue). We learned that each scene of our stories should include at least two kinds of details, or all three.

Our next writing project is a Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook. Students will write a fiction adventure story with choices that the reader can make. Each choice can change how the story turns out. Students will publish their adventure as a website at sites.mrhowd.com. See below for more details.
