Math: Students practiced estimating quotients by rounding to compatible numbers. For example, to estimate 338 / 6, the number can be rounded to 360 / 6. The number 340 is actually closer to 338, but 360 is easier to divide by 6. The answer is that 338 / 6 is about 60. Homework is to finish Journal P4-2.

Science: We learned about the excretory system today.

Writing: We talked about different types of leads that a writer could use to begin a story:

• A talking lead would begin with dialogue.
• A visual lead would begin with describing what a character, place or object looked like.
• An action lead would start with the character doing something.

Science: We learned about the digestive system and how proteins, starches and fats and broken down in the body. We also traced the path through the digestive system using a model in class. Here’s an online body browser than can show the parts of the human body.

Social Studies: Students wrote an explorer’s log entry to show what they learned about the motivations of the explorers, the tools they used, and the products they brought back from the New World. Homework is to finish Notebook p. 25.

Spelling: Students completed a spelling and skill test today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students continued to practice reading a selection from their Literature Circles book that they will read as a monologue to the class. This monologue gives students practice with reading aloud with proper speed, tone and volume.

Writing: We talked about revising dialogue so that it help the reader understand a part of the story. If the dialogue is not that important, if it’s just “chit chat,” it can be removed. We also talked about how dialogue should be back and forth, one speaker talks, then the other, then the first speaker, then the second.

The next piece of writing, a fiction story, will be due on Monday, November 26. Students should be drafting by now.

Math: Students worked on a math test today.

Science: We learned about the digestive system. Students completed an experiment that involved the breakdown of starch into sugar using the enzymes in saliva. Homework is to finish the Saliva Makes it Sweet experiment.

Social Studies: None today due to our math skills time.
