Class activities for Tuesday, April 24

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: We read Esperanza Rising, our shared reading book.

Writing: Students continued to work on the I-Search research project by working on their digital presentation using Google Docs.

This informational project will be presented on Friday, April 27 at our I-Search Conference. Family members are welcome to attend!

Math: We reviewed prime and composite numbers and multiples today. We also learned about equivalent fractions today. Students learned to multiply the top and bottom of a fraction by the same number to get a new equivalent fraction. Homework is to finish Journal P 11-4.

Science: We continued to watch The Privileged Planet about how the earth is uniquely suited in the universe for life and scientific discovery. See Monday’s post for the trailer.

Social StudiesNone today due to our math skills time.

Spelling: Students learned that consonant blends are two more more consonants next to each other in a word. Each letter sound is heard. In the word state, st is a consonant blend.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students continued to work on the I-Search research project by working on their digital presentation using Google Docs.

This informational project will be due Friday, April 27. Students should be collecting information and planning their presentation.

Math: Students practiced identifying prime and composite numbers today. We also learned about multiples and practiced thinking about if one number is a multiple of another.

  • Prime numbers have only two factors. Examples: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 23.
  • Composite numbers have more than two factors. Examples: 4, 8, 10, 21, 25, 81.
  • Multiples of 5: 5, 10, 15, 20.
  • Multiples of 7: 7, 14, 21, 28

Homework is to finish Journal P11-2 and P11-3, even-numbered problems.

Writing: None today due to our Space Fashion Show. Students are continuing to work on the I-Search research project by working on their digital presentation using Google Docs.

Math: None today due to STAR Friday.

Science: Today was the Space Fashion Show! Everyone did great and the class received a lot of compliments on their well-written scripts and creative costumes!

Spelling: We practiced adding suffixes onto number words: twentieth, thirtieth, fortieth, hundredth.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students received new informational magazines today to read in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students continued to work on the next writing piece, the I-Search research project today, by working on their digital presentation using Google Docs.

This informational project will be due Friday, April 27. Students should be collecting information and planning their presentation.

Math: We practiced finding all the factors for a product. For example, here are all the factors for 24:

  • 1 x 24
  • 2 x 12
  • 3 x 8
  • 4 x 6
Homework is to finish Journal P11-1 that was started in class.

Science: Today was our final workday on the Space Fashion Show. The Space Fashion Show will be tomorrow, April 20, at 10am in the small gym. Homework is to finish any remaining work on this project, including the script, practicing reading the script, and finishing the costume.

Social Studies: Students reviewed and took notes about the group posters made to compare the Midwest to other regions of the United States.

Spelling: Students reviewed irregular verbs and homophones today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: The remaining students performed their monologues to the class, reading with speed, tone and volume.

Writing: Students continued to work on the next writing piece, the I-Search research project today, by working on the digital presentation using Google Docs.

This informational project will be due Friday, April 27. Students should be collecting information and planning their presentation.

Math: Students completed a division test today.

Science: None today due to extra time with science yesterday. Students are continuing to work on the Space Fashion ShowHere is more about this project, including a sample fashion show script. The Space Fashion Show will be on Friday at 10am in the small gym. Willing students may stay after school tomorrow until 5 pm to help decorate the small gym for the fashion show.

Social Studies: Students worked in groups to finish making a diagram comparing the Midwest region to other regions in the United States.
