Spelling: We reviewed the common spelling patterns for the /ou/ sound: ow and ou. This will be skill tested on this week’s spelling test.

Writing: We talked about writing dialogue so that it is not just small talk or chit chat. Good dialogue helps the reader to understand the action of the story and what the characters are like.

Math: We reviewed division facts today and learned a method for calculating mental math division facts. Homework is to finish Journal pp. 103-105.

Science: We reviewed the analysis questions from the activity about testing medicines.

Social Studies: We worked on some notes about Roanoke and started to learn about Jamestown. Homework is to finish Notebook p. 33.

Spelling: We practiced spelling compound words today. We also reviewed the idea that the letter r changes the vowel sounds in words (cat vs. cart).

Reading: Students are finished with their Literature Circles magazines. Today, students practiced reciting plays that they will perform for the class.

Writing: We reviewed the 2-3-1 pattern of saving the most interesting action, problems or facts for later in a story. Students also started drafting.

Math: Students completed a geometry test today.

Science: We learned about clinical trials, why a placebo is necessary and how people experience the placebo effect when their health improves without receiving medicine. Homework is to finish Analysis questions 1-3 on p. 19.

Today is King’s Day, January 6th, in Mexico and around the world. Here is part of our King’s Day fiesta from yesterday:

Spelling: We reviewed the strategy of spelling compound words by spelling the individual parts of the word (base + ball = baseball).

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We discussed the idea of saving the most interesting action, problems or facts for later in a story. This follows a 2-3-1 pattern, where more important details are saved for later, but the last detail is the most important. This will keep the reader interested in finishing the story.

Our next piece of writing, a fiction piece, will be due Friday, January 21. Students should be prewriting at this time.

Math: None today due to our Dia de los Reyes activities. We left our shoes out next to our desks, and the “Kings” left us some goodies. Then we cut into our Rosca de Reyes “bread”, looking for the baby figurines. The four students that found baby figurines in their bread get to plan our next fiesta on February 2, Dia de la Candelaria. We then played Toma Todo with wooden tops.

There will be a  math test over geometry.

Science: None today due to library.

Social Studies: We thought about what it would be like to move to a new school in a different country. This is what it was like for English settlers to move to the New World. Homework is to complete Notebook p. 33.
