Class activities for Wednesday, June 7
Technology: Today we took a STAR reading test and finished working on our PowerPoint yearbooks. Students will be provided with a CD of class projects and pictures so they can continue to work on their digital yearbook this summer.
Reading: We have been working all year towards our goal of an average reading grade level of 4.9; we began the year at an average reading grade level of 3.9. Today, we reached an average reading level of 5.1, for an average growth of over one year! Great work, class!
Math: We worked on converting improper fractions into mixed numbers, and vice versa.
Social Studies: We completed an activity called “Michigan Match,” where students tried to match up a series of statements about Michigan history and place the statements into groups. Topics discussed included the War of 1812, the Erie Canal, pioneer life, the Underground Railroad, factories, automobiles, World War II, the Flint Sit-Down Strike, the Mackinaw Bridge and the Bottle Bill.
Notes:
- End of the Year Pot Luck! Our class will be having a Pot Luck lunch tomorrow, June 8, starting at 1:00 pm. Students volunteered to bring a main dish, side dish, dessert, drink or utensils. Ask your student what they volunteered, and let me know if there are any adjustments that need to be made. We would love for you to come eat with us, and watch or help with our crazy games!

Hi Connie!
Thanks for the kind comment. I definitely appreciated having you as a classroom volunteer. You made my life much easier when it came to Math Skills, field trips and parties! Thanks for volunteering so much of your time. And who knows, maybe you can volunteer to “spruce up” some of those class websites! See you around school!

Hi Bailey!
I’ll miss you, too! But you’ll have an awesome year in 5th grade, for sure! Keep working hard like you always do, and stay curious about science! Come back and visit, and you can always write me emails or post comments on the website–you don’t have to be in my class to do that.
Did you have a good summer? Ready for school? What do you think of the new website?
Well, see you later,
Mr. Howd

Bailey,
Have you figured out what makes it bubble? Look on the Internet to see if you can find out more about your experiment or find other chemicals that bubble!
