Cursive: Cursive worksheets pp. 27-29 were reviewed today.

Reading: We used reading time today to work on the sand and salt separation experiment.

Writing: We learned that it is important to use precise nouns when writing (instruction manual, not car booklet; jack, not thing that lifts the car up). Class activities for Thursday, October 26

Thursday, October 26th, 2006

Spelling: Today was the spelling test. Look for a Words to Learn list to come home on Monday.

Cursive: Cursive worksheets pp. 27-29 were made available this week and are due on Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles, and all groups finished their short, practice books. We will have a discussion day tomorrow, and students will create a project to share their book next week.

Writing: We played “Spicy Verb Charades” to see the importance of using specific verbs that describe action. Students also worked on their piece of writing. Most students should be nearing completion of their rough draft and starting to revise. The next piece of writing will be due November 3; this will be the final writing grade of the marking period.

Math: We used small boxes of raisins to collect data. We then entered the data into a tally chart and looked for data “landmarks”: minimum, maximum, range (the difference between minimum and maximum), and mode (the number that occurs most often). Homework is to complete Math Boxes 2.5.

Science: Students continued to work on separating sand and salt. We did an experiment to see what happens when salt is placed in water. Students are now finalizing their plans for separating the salt from the sand. Homework is to ask an adult to help boil some salt water and then see what happens to the salt after the water is gone.

Social Studies: We took notes in our Regions minibook about the dry climate, Rocky Mountains and fertile valleys of the West. Then we read some picture books to learn about Hawai’i and Alaska, our western most states.

Behavior Update:

  • Yellows: three magnets
  • Oranges: one magnet
  • Reds: none

Ask your student what kind of choices they made.

Class activities for Tuesday, October 24 and Wednesday, October 25

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

I was at a Science Inquiry planning meeting on Tuesday, so that day’s activities are included in this post.

Spelling: Students worked on the Unit 2 spelling worksheets yesterday, and we reviewed those worksheets today. There is a spelling test tomorrow, and the worksheets are due at that time.

Cursive: Cursive worksheets pp. 27-29 were made available this week and are due on Friday.

Reading: Yesterday was a reading day in Literature Circles, and today was a discussion day. We also read from our shared book, Esperanza Rising.

Writing: Yesterday was a work day for students, who should be working on their rough draft by now. Today, we discussed how writing is more interesting if the writer uses spicy verbs that describe the action (dashed, bolted, zipped, not run; shouted, screamed, whispered, not talked). The next piece of writing will be due November 3; this will be the final writing grade of the marking period.

Math: Yesterday and today, students played games to review place value and the value of digits in numbers. Yesterday’s homework was Math Boxes 2.4.

Science: Students made electricity, electrical safety and storm safety posters yesterday, to tell what they already know about our upcoming unit. No science today due to art.

Social Studies: Yesterday, students discussed how mountains in the West make that region’s climate dry. The rain clouds can’t elevate over the mountains, so most of the rain falls on the west side of the mountains. By the time the air moves over the mountains, the rain has fallen, and only dry air is left. No social studies today due to library.

Behavior Update:

  • Yellows: one magnet
  • Oranges: no magnets
  • Reds: none

Ask your student what kind of choices they made.

Notes:

  • Hawaiian Beach Bash! That’s our Halloween party on October 31 from 2-4 pm. The menu: Hawaiian pizza, fruit kabobs, and punch. We are in need of families to donate towards the cost of pizza, help make the fruit kabobs or other goodies, provide plates, cups, napkins (Hawaiian-themed?), or chaperone at the time of the party.
