Class activities for Friday, November 10

Friday, November 10th, 2006

Spelling: Today students wrote sentences for homophone pairs and their partners tried to indentify which homophone fit in the sentences.  

Cursive: Cursive worksheets pp. 33-35 were reviewed today.

Reading: Students previewed and voted for the following new Literature Circles books:

  • Mummies in the Morning, by Mary Pope Osborne
  • Keeper of the Doves, by Betsy Byars
  • The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, by Barbara Robinson
  • The Bad Beginning, by Lemony Snicket
  • A Year Down Yonder, by Richard Peck

Writing: Today’s minilesson was how to find the correct spelling of a word (look it up, ask someone, look around the room, look on the 500 Core Word list, write it different ways). Students also continued to prewrite and should be ready to start drafting on Monday. The next piece of writing is due December 1.

Math: Students took part in Math Skills today, and completed a MiniQuiz over bar graphs and addition.

Science Inquiry: Students explored the following inquiry stations:

  • Flight (airplanes and parachutes)
  • Weight (with a digital scale)
  • Electricity (circuits)
  • Ramps and rollers (using the donated cardboard tubes!)
  • Magnets

This open exploration is preparing students for when they will explore topics of interest, design experiments and make discoveries.

Veteran’s Day Assembly: We also had an assembly today for Veteran’s Day. Students received a flag, learned about the Color Guard, learned how the flag is folded and what the folds mean, and asked questions of the veterans.

Spelling: Today we practicied identifying homophone pairs: there/their/they’re, weather/whether, choose/chews, etc. 

Cursive: Cursive worksheets pp. 33-35 were made available this week and are due on Friday.

Reading: Today the final two groups presented their Literature Circles projects. Students will get new Literature Circles books next week.

Writing: Today’s minilesson was about using a checklist for editing. The Checklist for Good Writers has an editing checklist at the bottom to help students focus on common errors. Get a copy of the checklist on the Writing page. Students also continued prewriting for their next piece of writing due December 1.

Math: Students started a final copy of the bar graph they began yesterday, and also worked on puzzle pages related to graphing. Homework is complete the bar graph and puzzle pages 65-66. The bar graph will be worth a MiniQuiz grade.

Science: We completed an experiment to identify electrical conductors and insulators.

Social Studies: We read about government and how laws are created. Homework is to write at least one Jeopardy question for these answers: taxes, State Legislature, legislative branch, bill, and budget. Click here for the Jeopardy worksheet and directions.

Class activities for Wednesday, November 8

Spelling: Today we reviewed the “Fix It” page of the Unit 3 spelling worksheets. We also learned about how a new sound is created when an h is added to c, t, w, p, and s. These letter combinations are called digraphs.

Cursive: Cursive worksheets pp. 33-35 were made available this week and are due on Friday.

Reading: Today three groups presented their Literature Circles projects. The remaining two groups will present tomorrow.

Writing: Students started prewriting for their next piece of writing due December 1.

Math: Students each chose a question to ask, surveyed the class, created a tally chart, and started a bar graph on graph paper. Homework is complete a rough draft of the bar graph tonight.

Science: We reviewed the Repair Manual worksheet and disected a light bulb. We learned that that glass globe prevents oxygen from entering the circuit and allowing the filament to heat up excessively. At a higher temperature, the filament burns brightly but then melts, and the light stays lit for only a few seconds.

Social Studies: Students received new Michigan books and made government mini-books. Homework is to decorate the cover of their mini-books.

Spelling: Today we reviewed the “Stretch It” page of the Unit 3 spelling worksheets.

Cursive: Cursive worksheets pp. 33-35 were made available and are due on Friday.

Reading: Today was the last Literature Circles project work day for groups. Projects will be presented on Wednesday.

Writing: None today due to technology. The next piece of writing will be due December 1.

Math: We made a bar graph of student head sizes and calculated the median head size. Homework is to finish journal pp. 43-45.

Science: We reviewed the Path Finders experiment from Thursday. Homework is to complete the “Repair Manual” worksheet.

Social Studies: Students completed a test over our study of US Regions.

Spelling: Today students completed a review spelling quiz.

Cursive: Cursive worksheets pp. 30-32 were due to be completed by today.

Reading: None today due to an anti-bullying assembly. Students will share, on Wednesday, the Literature Circles projects they are currently working on. We also read our paper (Time for Kids) and had our coffee (juice). Click here for a list of juice volunteers.

Writing: We discussed today about how using interesting, choice adjectives gives the reader a better picture of the writing. A piece of writing was due into portfolios today. Writing not turned in today will be penalized one grade for being late.

Math: Students completed a MiniQuiz today over minimum, maximum, range, mode, median and addition of multi-digit numbers. We also had Math Skills.

Science Inquiry: We completed an activity called, “Science and Questions,” in which we brainstormed areas of science students learned about in the past, and thought of tests that could be done by students in the different topics.
