December 12th, 2006
Spelling: None today. Students are working on the unit 5 spelling worksheets. Visit the spelling page to download a copy.
Cursive: Cursive worksheets pp. 48-50 are available and due on Friday.
Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.
Writing: We learned today that every story has two parts: an inner story (the character’s thoughts and feelings) and an outer story (the plot and action). Students’ writing will be more interesting when both the inner and outer story are developed. The next piece of writing, some type of narrative (personal or fiction), is due December 22.
Math: We reviewed true and false number sentences, and then practiced using parentheses in number sentences. Students learned that the parentheses tell which part of the number sentence to start with first, and that changing the location of the parentheses changes the answer of the number sentence: (10/2)+3=5 versus 10/(2+3)=2. Homework is to finish journal pp. 68-69.
Science: Students worked on designing a poster about staying safe with electricity (avoid electrical equipment, keep cords away from water, don’t use damanged cords, don’t overload circuits, etc.). Homework is to finish the poster.
Social Studies: We played a game about Michigan’s natural resources: soil (growing blueberries, potatoes, beans, soybeans, cherries), copper, iron, timber and water.
