Class activities for Wednesday, May 23

Spelling: None due to the Essential Skills Science test. The unit 11 spelling worksheets are available and can be printed from here.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words are due each Friday.

Reading: None today due to the Essential Skills Science test.      

Writing: We read several poems and learned about several new styles of poems, including concrete poems (poems in the shape of the subject) and poems for two voices. We also learned about using a double focus in a poem. This kind of poem uses an object to tell about a person, such as grandpa’s shoes or grandma’s kitchen. A collection of poems will be due into portfolios on Friday, June 1.

We also read Casey at the Bat, a poem about a baseball game and a hero that comes up short. Related to this poem about baseball, we listened to, read and watched Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s on First” skit about a baseball team with unconventional names. Watch the skit below:

Math: None due to the Essential Skills Science test.

Science: We learned that most of the water on earth is salt water. Water is used for factories, farms, homes and towns. Drinking water comes from the ground, lakes and rivers.

Social Studies: None due to the Essential Skills Science test.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.      

Writing: None today due to an extended science discussion. A collection of poems will be due into portfolios on Friday, June 1.

Math: None due to the Essential Skills Social Studies test.

Science: We discussed the Water Planet activity and found out that the surface of the earth is about 3/4, or 75%, covered with water.

Social Studies: We completed the Essential Skills Social Studies test.

Spelling: We discussed ways students are influenced to use drugs in healthy and legal ways, and unhealthy and illegal ways.

The unit 11 spelling worksheets are available and can be printed from here.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words are due each Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups discussed determining importance as a reading strategy.     

Writing: None today due to technology. A collection of poems will be due into portfolios on Friday, June 1.

Math: We reviewed equivalent fractions by playing equivalent fraction rummy. Homework is to complete puzzle page 32.

Science: We started our final unit on Earth’s Water by completing an experiment about the amount of water covering the surface of the earth. Homework is to complete the Water Planet activity.

Social Studies: We started learning about the Civil War today and how Michigan was involved in helping the cause.

Monday, May 21st, 2007

Spelling: We continued transforming words into other words by rearranging, adding or removing letters. The unit 11 worksheets are available and can be printed from here.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words are due each Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles. We also listened to the 8th grade band from West Middle School during this time.     

Writing: None today. A collection of poems will be due into portfolios on Friday, June 1.

Math: Students completed a MiniQuiz about equivalent fractions.

Science: In Health, we started a unit on drugs, alcohol and tobacco by discussing what drugs are (anything that is put into the body and changes thoughts, feelings or actions) and when they can be healthy, legal, unhealthy and illegal.

Spelling: We transformed words into other words by rearranging, adding or removing letters. The unit 11 worksheets are available and can be printed from here.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words are due each Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on inferring.    

Writing: We talked about using a metaphor in a poem (school is a pinball game, my house is a zoo). Students drafted poems using music, emotion, imagery or metaphor. A collection of poems will be due into portfolios on Friday, June 1.

Math: None today due to a three-on-three basketball tournament assembly to get ready for the Relay for Life basketball game tonight.

Science: Today was the final work day for the Space Fashion Show scripts. The Space Fashion Show will be tomorrow afternoon. Click here for more information.

Social Studies: Students completed a social studies test today.
