Class activities for Tuesday, October 2
Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007Spelling: We reviewed the spelling worksheets. We also talked about what everyone wants to be when they grow up, which was one of the tasks in the spelling worksheets. We figured out that everyone will need to go to college to get to their goals, and doing well in fourth grade is one step in the right direction.
Students have the Unit 1 spelling worksheets (download here), which will be due at the time of the spelling test this week. Find more information, including spelling lists, by clicking on the Spelling link. A spelling test will be this week, Thursday.
Cursive: Cursive pp. 23-25 were made available today and are due Friday.
Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. We practiced making connections (”that reminds me of …”) using Esperanza Rising.
Writing: We made maps of special places to “dig up buried stories.” Students put Xs on their maps to mark something they remember that they could write a story about. The next piece of writing is due on October 12.
Math: We reviewed the rules for being a polygon: no intersections, no gaps, no curves. We also learned the names for three to twelve-sided polygons. We did all this by singing our favorite “Mathmas Carols,” including “O Polygon” and “The 12 Polygons of Math Class.” Homework is to complete Puzzle Page 31 about coloring different polygons.
Science: None today due to talking about what we want to be when we grow up.
Social Studies: Students shared how they sorted words from the WordSort started last week with the guest teacher. We also learned about the Appalachian Mountains, how glaciers wore down the mountains, and about waterfalls.
