Class activities for Wednesday, October 3

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

Spelling: Today we reviewed long and short vowel sounds. Students played a game to sort words into long and short vowels. This will be the skill test for tomorrow. We have been stressing that short vowel sounds usually only have one vowel, and long vowel sounds usually have two vowels (for example, hop is short, hope is long). Students have the Unit 1 spelling worksheets (download here), which will be due tomorrow at the time of the spelling test. Find more information, including spelling lists, by clicking on the Spelling link.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 23-25 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles. We discussed the connections we made yesterday using Esperanza Rising.

Writing: We practiced “freewriting,” which is a way to collect specific details quickly. The students selected a topic and wrote everything they could remember about it in three minutes, without stopping. The key is to keep writing and not stop. After three minutes, they looked back and circled parts they might want to use in their story.

The next piece of writing, a personal memory or story, is due on October 12.

Math: We reviewed polygon rules and names and played math pictionary as a review game. Homework is to complete the Hidden Polygons worksheet about finding various polygons.

Science: We completed the Getting Directions experiment today about making a compass. Homework is to complete the experiment activity record, including the analyze and conclude questions.

Social Studies: We learned about how factories were built in the Northeast by mountains so waterfalls could be used to power the machines in the factories. Homework is to complete the WordSort activity started last week.
