Class activities for Wednesday, April 30

Spelling: We continued to review the soft-syllable endings for the /er/ sound: –er, –ar, and-or.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of at least seven words each are due Friday.

Reading: Students received new Literature Circles groups reading the following books:

  • Old Yeller
  • Shiloh
  • Sounder
  • Summer of Riley
  • Because of Winn-Dixie
  • Dog Watch: Trouble in Pembrook

Writing: We started reading Love That Dog, by Sharon Creech, which is a book, written as a poem, about poetry. Students continued to work on poems in class. A collection of poems will be due into portfolios on Friday, May 16. The poems will be shared at a Poetry Slam at Border’s Book Store in June.

Math: None due to an assembly on the Great Lakes.

Science: We reviewed the Big Earth, Small Moon experiment today and learned that the earth is four times larger than the moon.

Social Studies: We learned about the American Revolution, how Michigan was used as a base by the British, and how the British refused to leave Michigan after they lost the war.

Spelling: We reviewed the soft-syllable endings for the /er/ sound: –er, –ar, and-or.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of at least seven words each are due Friday.

Reading: Students previewed new Literature Circles books today.

Writing: Today was the beginning of a unit on poetry. We talked about the three ingredients of a poem:

  1. imagery (visualizing and feeling)
  2. music (a rhythm or beat)
  3. emotion

Not all poems have all three of these elements, but all good poems have at least one. A collection of poems will be due into portfolios on Friday, May 16. The poems will be shared at a Poetry Slam at Border’s Book Store in June.
Math: Students played a game to practice division. Homework is to complete five division problems and have a parent check them.

Science: We completed an experiment today to see how much smaller the moon is than the earth. Homework is to complete the experiment analyze and conclude questions if not finished in class.

Social Studies: We watched some video clips showing some of the reasons for the American Revolution.

Reading: Students presented their Literature Circles plays today.

Writing: Today was the I-Search Conference! Nine classes attended and listened to the presentations and question and answer sessions. The class received many compliments on their information, presentations, speaking, and neat appearance! Great work!

Math: None today due to Literature Circles plays.

Science: None today due to I-Search presentations.

Social Studies: None today due to I-Search presentations.

Class activities for Friday, April 25

Spelling: We reviewed contractions today as two words shortened into one.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of at least seven words each are due Friday.

Reading: Students practiced their Literature Circles plays today.

Writing: Today was the last school work day for students to work on their I-Search projects (click here for more details). Students have until Saturday to…

  • spell check their presentations using SpellCheck.net or some other resource, or
  • work on their presentation saved on MrHowd.com Google Docs (docs.mrhowd.com). This presentation can be edited from school and home.

I will save all presentations on Sunday, so no work done on that day will be included in the presentations shown at school.

Students will present their research on Monday morning, April 28, from 10:30-11:30 am in the small gym during our I-Search Conference. Family members are welcome! View your student’s presentation time here.

Students have been asked to wear nice, business casual type clothing (no jeans, t-shirts or shorts, please). Students may bring clothes to change into after their presentation. Finally, it might be a good idea to have your student practice talking through their presentation before Monday.

Math: Students completed a division MiniQuiz today.

Science: In health today we talked about four kinds of control:

  • environment
  • authority
  • norms
  • self-control

Social Studies: Students made a new Americans Arrive in Michigan minibook today.
