Class activities for Monday, April 14

Spelling: Today we learned common spelling patterns for the /oi/ sound: oi and oy. We also noticed that oi is the most frequently used pattern, but oy is the most frequently used pattern at the end of a word.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of at least seven words each are due Friday.

Reading: None today due to extra time in the computer lab. We will have a double reading time tomorrow.

Students completed a STAR computerized reading assessment today, and again, our class average reading level improved! Our class achieved an average reading level of 5.46, which is significantly higher than our yearly goal of 5.16. Great work students and families! You can check your students most current reading level in the reading section of SnapGrades.

Writing: Students continued to work on their I-Search projects (click here for more details) by collecting research on their I-Search 2008 class wiki pages, planning their presentations using webs created with Bubbl.us, and searching UnitedStreaming for related video clips and images. Students also continued to work on their presentation saved on MrHowd.com Google Docs (docs.mrhowd.com). This presentation can be edited from school and home.

A summary of the project:

Students will research their I-Search question using print and internet sources and create a digital presentation using PowerPoint or MrHowd.com Google Docs presentation software. Students are collecting their research on our I-Search 2008 class wiki. Later, students will present their findings to other students who sign up to attend their talk. The presentation slides will be turned in to portfolios for a writing grade.

The I-Search presentation is due April 25.

Math: Today was a test over estimating, rounding and multiplication.

Science: We reviewed for the science test tomorrow over sound, vibrations, pitch, and volume.

Social Studies: We learned that Pontiac’s Rebellion of Native Americans against the British did not end well for the Indians.
