Class activities for Monday, May 5

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Spelling: None today due to a cursive quiz.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of at least seven words each are due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circle; some groups practiced making connections and visualizing.

Writing: Today we discussed how a poem can have a “double-focus:”

Grandpa’s shoes
Were big and bruised,
Scratched and scuffed.
They’ve been places.

The poem above is about grandpa’s shoes, but can also be about grandpa, who is old, big, bruised and scuffed. They’ve both been places.

A collection of poems will be due into portfolios on Friday, May 16. The poems will be shared at a Poetry Slam at Border’s Book Store in June.

Math: We practiced multiplication and division stories today. Homework is Journal pp. 153-155.

Science: We continued to learn about some of the features of the moon:

  • No atmosphere;
  • No life;
  • No water;
  • Less mass, less gravity.

Homework is to finish Investigation Review pp. 42-42.
Social Studies: We talked about how the Native Americans lost the Battle at Fallen Timbers and were forced to give up some of their land in Michigan. Settlers moved in and the Michigan Territory was created.
