Class activities for Friday, June 6

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Spelling: Students completed a year-end achievement test today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of at least seven words each are due Friday. This was the last cursive assignment of the year.

Reading: None today.

Writing: Today was the last work day for the final writing project of the year, a compare and contrast piece called Find It, Decide It.

An overview of the project:
Students will work with a partner to make a decision (which CD to buy, which restaurant to go to, which vacation to take, which game to buy, which book to read, which movie to watch). Students will use the internet to find information to help them make their decision, and MrHowd.com Google Docs (docs.mrhowd.com) or Sites (sites.mrhowd.com) will be used to collaborate on the project.

Math: Students played fraction war to compare the size of fractions.

Science: We graded Investigation Review p. 86 today.

Social Studies: None today.

Notes:

  • Field Day is Monday, June 9. Our morning session of activities will be from 9:30 am until 11:50 am. We will have an afternoon session from 1:10-2:10 pm. The afternoon session includes a dunk tank. If your student will be going in the dunk tank, we discussed these rules:
    • students must have a change of clothes to go in the dunk tank or get soaked
    • girls must have swim suits that “meet in the middle:” the tops and bottoms of two piece suits must touch in the middle, or girls must wear a shirt over their suits
    • the goal is modesty, so please be modest
  • End of the Year Potluck and Picnic, Thursday, June 12, 12:30-3:50 pm. Here is a list of what students volunteered for. Family members are invited! Please RSVP below to indicate how many people are coming and how you can help

Spelling: None today due to practicing reading poetry for today’s Poetry Slam.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of at least seven words each are due Friday.

Reading: None today due to our Poetry Slam at Borders. Everyone read wonderfully and we gave the lunchtime customers a good show! Look for pictures soon.

Writing: Students continued to work on the final writing project of the year, a compare and contrast piece called Find It, Decide It.

Spelling: Today we reviewed the fact that some words have silent letters (could, talk) and nouns ending with f or fe are made plural by changing those letters to a v (knife to knives, loaf to loaves).

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of at least seven words each are due Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students continued to work on the final writing project of the year, a compare and contrast piece called Find It, Decide It. Students should be typing ways that their two choices compare and contrast; we talked about having at least five points of comparison and contrast. The final product should be typed and use complete sentences, not bullets.

Math: We reviewed equivalent fractions (1/2 = 2/4) today using fraction cards. Homework is to finish Journal p. 207.

Spelling: Today students prepared their Words to Learn list from words they missed on their last spelling test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of at least seven words each are due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on synthesizing and using context clues as reading strategies.

Writing: Students continued to work on the final writing project of the year, a compare and contrast piece called Find It, Decide It. Students should be starting to type ways that their two choices compare. The final product should be typed and use complete sentences, not bullets.

Science: We reviewed states of matter (solid, liquid and gas), how they act, and the names for changes in states of matter (melting, freezing, condensing, evaporation).

Social Studies: None today due to a double math time.
