Spelling: Today was the Unit 3 spelling and skill test. Hawaiian Beach Bash

Cursive: Cursive pp. 33-35 are available and due Monday.

Reading: None today due to our Hawaiian Beach Bash Halloween party.

Writing: None today due to our Hawaiian Beach Bash Halloween party. A personal narrative, based on a true story (slightly fictionalized), is due November 7. This will be the final writing grade of the first marking period.

Math: None today due to our Hawaiian Beach Bash Halloween party.

Science: None today due to our Hawaiian Beach Bash Halloween party.

Social Studies: We learned that the southwest is famous for oil and cattle.

Hawaiian Beach Bash: We had a radical time, dude! Thanks to all the families that beach-bash.JPGdonated money for the pizza, supplies and food for the party, time to setup, cleanup, and run errands, and for help serving food! We had a great time with Hawaiian pizza, fruit kabobs, punch, and games with surfing, hula-hooping, dancing, putting on Hawaiian shirts, and passing coconuts. Check back later for photos!

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Spelling: We reviewed consonant digraphs (ch, th, wh, ph, sh); this will be the skill tested on tomorrow’s spelling test.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 33-35 are available and due Friday.

Reading: None today due to Diversity Day. We went to various stations about setting goals, understanding different cultures and languages, solving conflicts, exploring careers and understanding multiple intelligences.

Writing: None today due to Diversity Day.

A personal narrative, based on a true story (slightly fictionalized), is due November 7. This will be the final writing grade of the first marking period.

Math: None today due to Diversity Day.

Science: None today due to an extra time with social studies.

Social Studies: We learned that the southwest is famous for a dry climate and deserts, coastal plains along the ocean in Texas, and being near the Mexican border.

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Spelling: We reviewed rules for capitalizing words:

  1. Names of specific people
  2. Names of specific places
  3. Titles
  4. Names of days, weeks months, holidays, but not seasons

We’ll have a spelling test on Friday. Your student should have their Words to Learn list to practice for the next test.Cursive: Cursive pp. 33-35 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on the reading strategy of using context clues to aid with meaning.

Writing: We discussed how strong verbs do a lot of work in the writing. Strong verbs help the reader to picture the writing and make it more interesting. Went is not a strong verb, dash or creep are. Say is not a strong verb, whisper or shout are.

Today was the first revising day scheduled. However, due to poor choices and inefficient use of time, the class had no time to revise in class.

Math: Today we reviewed data landmarks: maximum, minimum, range, mode and median. There will be a MiniQuiz over data landmarks tomorrow.

Science: We completed the What is White Light Made Of? experiment using flashlights and prisms. Homework is to finish the analyze and conclude questions if not done in class.

Social Studies: None due to library.

Spelling: We reviewed the correct usage of possessive pronouns, and noticed that possessive pronouns never use an apostrophe: That is their dog; the dog is theirs.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 33-35 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on synthesizing as a reading strategy.

Writing: We discussed writing details and examples to “prove” general statements in a piece of writing. Don’t say, “it was fun,” prove it by telling what was so fun. Then the reader will be ready to believe.

Today was the final drafting day scheduled. A personal narrative, based on a true story (slightly fictionalized), is due November 7. This will be the final writing grade of the first marking period.Math: Today we played Data Top It by putting math cards in order and then determining the maximum, minimum, range, mode and median. Homework is to complete the Data Landmarks worksheet.

Science: We reviewed the What is Light? experiment and learned that light is energy.

Social Studies: We learned that the Southwest if famous for the Grand Canyon and Colorado River.

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Spelling: We reviewed the usage for the homophones, there, their and they’re.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 33-35 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading and discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We discussed today focusing on a narrow time for a topic. That way, only the most interesting parts will be including in the piece, and students can spend time elaborating and explaining the main focus.

Students also continued to work on their draft; tomorrow is the last planned drafting day. A personal narrative, based on a true story (slightly fictionalized), is due November 7. This will be the final writing grade of the first marking period.

Math: Today we made a line plot of family sizes in our class. We learned that the median (middle) family size in class was 4.5 members, and the most frequent (mode) family size was 4 members. Homework is to complete Journal p. 37 about data landmarks.

Science: Students completed the What is Light? experiment about adding batteries into a circuit and observing changes to the heat and light from a connected bulb. Homework is to finish the analyze and conclude questions if not done in class.

Social Studies: We finished learning about the Midwest by noting that the Midwest is famous for automobile manufacturing, glaciers forming the Great Lakes, and having the Great Lakes.
