Class activities for Monday, February 9

Spelling: None today due to discussion of last week’s activities with the guest teacher.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on connections and questioning as reading strategies.

Writing: None today due to the unavailability of the computer lab and an extended time with Literature Circles.

This week, students are continuing to work on their Choose Your Own Adventure fiction stories, created on a website at This story is due February 13. An example of the Choose Your Own Adventure genre can be found here and here.

Ask your student to show you their Choose Your Own Adventure story, and even click through their choices to see how the story is going!

Math: None today due to art.

Science: We reviewed the concepts of mixtures (two or more objects that can be separated) and compounds (two or more objects that cannot be separated). A salad is a mixture because the lettuce, tomatoes, croutons, etc. can be separated, but a cake is a compound because the eggs, flour, milk, etc. cannot be separated after the cake is baked; the cake is a new compound, different from cake batter.

Students used this knowledge to separate iron filings (with a magnet) from a mixture of iron filings, salt and sand. Tomorrow’s challenge is to separate the sand and salt.

Social Studies: None today due to discussion of last week’s activities with the guest teacher.
