Class activities for Friday, January 22

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Spelling:  We used word pairs to review the idea that some words have silent letters (rat/rate, pin/pine).

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 61, 62, and 64 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students worked on publishing their next piece of writing.

The next piece of writing will be a fiction piece, due Monday, January 25. Students should be publishing by now.

Math: We reviewed decimals and fractions and learned how to compare two decimals. Homework is to finish Journal pp. 83-85.

Science: We started an experiment about making a circuit with a switch.

Social Studies: None on Fridays.

Spelling:  None today due to finishing the writing prompt started in class yesterday.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 57-59 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on using context clues to solve unknown words.

Writing: None today due to technology.

The next piece of writing will be a fiction piece, due Monday, January 25. Students should be editing or publishing by now.

Math: None today due to the Career Fair.

Science: We reviewed our last science experiment about creating an electrical circuit with a bulb, battery and wire, and took notes in our minibooks. We also took a magnified look at the components of an incandescent light bulb.

Social Studies: None today due to the Career Fair.

We learned about the following careers today:

  • Engineering;
  • Veterinary medicine;
  • Attorney;
  • Police;
  • Nursing/Teaching;
  • Author/Pastor

Special thanks to Pastor Dean Stewart, pastor of Mayfair Bible Church, for presenting an extra session to our class about being an author of children’s books. We also appreciate that he gave a copy of his books to lucky students in our class!

Spelling:  None today due to watching Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 57-59 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on visualizing as a reading strategy.

Writing: We talked today about varying sentence beginnings so that sentences aren’t all starting with the same word over and over.

Students also started editing conferences with a partner. The next piece of writing will be a fiction piece, due Monday, January 25. Students should be editing by now.

Math: None today due to completing a writing prompt for the McGrath Writing Committee.

Science: None today due to library.

Social Studies: Students finished the geography challenge, started last week, about regions, elevation, rainfall and population maps.

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Spelling:  None today due to reviewing ideas we learned about magnetism, before starting a unit today on electricity.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 57-59 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on synthesizing as a reading strategy.

Writing: We talked today about breaking text into paragraphs. Here are the reasons to start a new paragraph:

  • A new character starts talking;
  • A new time in the story (time has passed);
  • A new place or setting in the story; or,
  • A new idea is brought up in the story.

Students also worked on editing their current piece of writing. The next piece of writing will be a fiction piece, due Friday, January 22. Students should be editing by now.

Math: None today due to extra time with Social Studies.

Science: Students made an electrical circuit using one bulb, batter and wire.

Social Studies: Due to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day being yesterday, we looked at images from the Civil Rights movement. We also sang and listened to some songs from the time:

Spelling:  Today was a preview of upcoming spelling words.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 54-56 are due today. Worksheet pp. 57-59 are available and due next Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students worked on revising today, and many students had revising conferences with a partner.

The next piece of writing will be a fiction piece, due Friday, January 22. Students should be revising by now.

Math: We continued learning about fractions and decimals today. Homework is to complete Journal p. 80, 82.

Science: Students completed a test today over magnetism.

Social Studies: None today due to working on math skills.
