Class activities for Wednesday, January 26

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Spelling: We reviewed common spelling patterns for the /ü/ and /yü/ sounds, as in the words blue, music, balloon, and huge.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on visualizing as a reading strategy.

Writing: Today, we looked at an example of a Choose Your Own Adventure story website (see Underground Railroad). We also noticed that Choose Your Own Adventure stories usually start by describing the main character or the setting of the story.

Our next project is a Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook, due Friday, February 11. Students will publish their adventure as a website at sites.mrhowd.com. Students should be prewriting to plan the characters, settings and action of their adventure stories.

Choose Your Own Adventure Resources

Math: We practiced interpreting the remainder of division problems. There are usually three choices: report the remainder as a fraction or decimal, ignore the remainder, or use the remainder to round up the answer. Homework is to finish Journal pp. 115-117.

Science: None due to library.

Social Studies: We compared the first three English colonies in America to see how they were alike and different. Homework is to finish the comparison page.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on connections, questioning using context clues to solve unknown words.

Writing: We started working on Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebooks, due Friday, February 11. Students will publish their adventure as a website at sites.mrhowd.com. Students should be prewriting to plan the characters, settings and action of their adventure stories.

Math: Students reviewed two additional methods for solving division problems. Homework is to complete a division practice page started in class.

Science: Students completed an experiment to test the level of touch sensitivity of the palm. Homework is to finish Student Sheet 7.1.

Social Studies: None today.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on questioning and determining importance as reading strategies.

Writing: Today was a work day in writing and a fiction piece was due into portfolios.

Math: Students completed a division MiniQuiz today.

Science: We started to work on an experiment about human variation.

Social Studies: None on Fridays.

Writing: Students worked on a school writing prompt today.

Our next piece of writing, a fiction piece, will be due Friday, January 21. Students should be publishing at this time.

Math: None today due to the Career Fair.

Science: We reviewed the analysis questions from the sensitivity activity.

Social Studies: We reviewed King Philip’s War.

Career Fair: Today was the Career Fair. View the presentations we attended below. Special thanks to Pastor Dean Stewart from Mayfair Bible Church, who presented again at our career fair (at least the fourth consecutive year!). Pastor Stewart is the author of several children’s books about character. He has donated several to our class. You can learn more about the books here.

Spelling: None today due to art.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences of seven or more words each are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on inferring as a reading strategy.

Writing: Our writing time was shortened due to art, but students had a short time to work on revising today.

Our next piece of writing, a fiction piece, will be due Friday, January 21. Students should be revising or editing at this time.

Math: We reviewed decimal division today in partner groups. Homework is to finish four problems from the review page started in class.

Science: We learned about how the nervous system controls the sense of touch and that there are more touch receptors on the fingertips than other parts of the arm. Homework is to finish the analysis questions on p. 27.

Social Studies: Some students acted out a skit about the Plymouth colony today. Homework is to finish Notebook p. 36.
